Your Travel Guide to Bayeux
Top 5 Things To Do In Bayeux (and beyond)
1. Take a Trip to Mont Saint Michel
The Mont-Saint-Michel is one of Europe’s major holy pilgrimage destinations. Set in a stunning bay shared by Normandy and Brittany, this incredibly beautiful location is an unforgettable sight and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Sitting atop this rocky islet you’ll find the “Wonder of the West”, a Gothic-style Benedictine abbey dedicated to the Archangel St Michel, and the village that grew up in the shadow of its walls.
2. See Bayeux Tapestry
The most famous attraction in the town is the Bayeux tapestry that depicts the story of the Norman conquest of England by William, Duke of Normandy. It is a masterpiece of Romanesque Art that was probably commissioned by William the Conqueror's half-brother.
The tapestry is 70 metres long and is composed of 58 scenes, 626 characters and 202 horses. The story begins in 1064 when Edward the Confessor offers his cousin William the succession to the English throne and ends with the battle of Hastings that took place in England in 1066.
3. Take a Full Day Landing Beaches Private Tour
Our most popular sightseeing day trips from Bayeux are mainly battlefield tours that will take you to the most important D-DAY sites of the area. We strongly suggest our full day landing beaches private tour which includes highlights such as Omaha beach, Sword Beach and Pointe du Hoc or it can be tailored to your wishes. Our small group Normandy sightseeing tours offer a personalised experience.
4. Have a Cheesy Time!
This part of France is not only famous for its history, but also for its dairy produce including butter and creme from Isigny. However, most of all it is famous for its cheese - the region is home to many different products that benefit from the AOP (Protected Appellation of Origin) label.
These include cheeses such as Camembert, Livarot and Neufchâtel. Around here they say the smellier, the better - so get your senses prepared! See our tips below for more information.
5. Explore the Hidden Gems of Beautiful Bayeux
Aside from our tours visiting the major attractions we can also venture off the beaten track to show you the gems that only a real local would know. Within the town that is crossed by the River Aure, visit the largest british war cemetery that dates back to the battle of Normandy that took place in June 1944.
Or why not follow a unique tour of Notre Dame Cathedral where you will be introduced to both Romanesque and Gothic architectural styles, the Bayeux museum with its extensive collection, the Bishop's palace located next to the Bayeux Cathedral?
Conducted by our team of expert guides that speak impeccable English, we organise both exclusive private personalised tours as well as fun & informative shared tours in and around Bayeux.
What is really attractive about Bayeux beyond the town itself is its location near the Normandy D-Day landing beaches and sites. From Bayeux there are many half day or full day trips that are organised to visit Omaha beach, Pointe du Hoc or the American Military Cemetery to name just a few. Bayeux is also a perfect location from which to visit Mont Saint Michel.

As a Normandy Destination Specialist, what are some tips you think are useful?
As a local operator of tours, activities & day trips from Bayeux for a number of years now, we certainly have some very helpful tips that we would love to share with you. 1. As you must be aware, each year in the beginning of June, the Normandy destination is one of the most popular in France as it is the time when commemorations of the Normandy landings take place. Of course, it is one of the great times to come to the region to participate in the many festivities that towns and villages put in place. The down side to this is that the region is overcrowded and moving around is made very difficult. Most sites are closed to the public especially when officials are around. If you really want to be there at this time of the year, plan ahead and don't hesitate to call upon incoming agencies like ours to organize your stay in a smooth and relaxed way. 2. As much as Normandy is associated with the D-Day landings, there are many other attractions that are really worth a visit in the area. Certainly, Mont Saint Michel quickly comes to mind but other great visits include the charming small town of Honfleur or the Pays d'Auge area with its stunning landscape and exquisite food, cider and brandies. For history buffs, following the trail of William the Conqueror is a great option to discover numerous sites and the Impressionist Route in Normandy will please all those that are fascinated with the paintings of artists such as Monet, Degas, Renoir Pissaro and many more. 3. The Dairy destination of France! The region is home to 6 different products that benefit from the AOP (Protected Appellation of Origin) label. These include cheeses such as Camembert, Livarot and neufchâtel but also butter and creme from Isigny. There are other dairy products that are made in the region such as the Pavé d'Auge, Boursin and Petit-Suisse invented in Normandy in 1850. Foreign visitors when coming to France are usually eager to pair local cheeses with wine and so they should be. However, please remember that some cheeses like Camembert, Brie or Blue cheese are made with unpasteurized milk or raw milk. To a stomach that is not used to this rich, saturated fat product combined with wine can have some sensitive side effects including digestive upsets. Our tip, take it slow at the beginning of your travel and let your stomach get acquainted.
