The Loire Valley is France's most diverse wine region — a 280-kilometre stretch of river valley producing an extraordinary range of styles, from the crisp Muscadet of the Atlantic coast to the elegant Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé at the eastern end, and the celebrated Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc wines of Touraine in between. A wine tour is the finest way to understand this diversity, with an expert guide who can navigate the appellations, introduce the producers and explain the terroir differences that make each wine distinct.

Loire Valley wine tours are available in two formats: small group (maximum 8 guests) and fully private (exclusively for your party). Both formats depart from Tours, include wine tastings at selected wineries and are led by certified expert wine guides.

The key wine appellations of Touraine

  • Chinon: The most celebrated red wine appellation of the Loire Valley, producing Cabernet Franc wines ranging from light and fruit-forward to structured and age-worthy. The medieval fortress town of Chinon itself is one of the most beautiful stops in the entire region.

  • Bourgueil & Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil: Neighbouring appellations on the north bank of the Loire, also based on Cabernet Franc. Bourgueil wines reflect a unique mix of gravelly and tuffeau soils, producing wines with a distinctive freshness and aromatic character.

  • Vouvray: The great white wine appellation of Touraine, producing Chenin Blanc in a remarkable range of styles — dry (sec), off-dry (demi-sec), sweet (moelleux) and sparkling (pétillant and mousseux). A Vouvray cellar visit, often carved into the soft tuffeau hillside, is one of the most distinctive wine experiences in the Loire.

  • Montlouis-sur-Loire: Directly across the Cher from Vouvray, producing Chenin Blanc wines of similar range and quality, often from smaller family estates with a more artisan approach.

Wine tour formats

  • Full-day small group wine tour (Bourgueil & Chinon): The core Loire Valley wine day — morning tasting in Bourgueil, lunch stop in Chinon, afternoon tasting at a Chinon family estate. Maximum 8 guests, all tasting fees included.

  • Private full-day wine tour (Bourgueil & Chinon): The same essential itinerary reserved exclusively for your party, with winery selection tailored to your wine interests and flexible timing throughout.

  • Private Vouvray & Montlouis wine tour: A private half-day or full-day focused on the great Chenin Blanc appellations east of Tours — ideal for white wine lovers or guests seeking a less-visited Loire wine experience.

  • Tailor-made private wine tour: Build your own Loire Valley wine day around specific appellations, producers or wine styles — Sancerre, Pouilly-Fumé, Muscadet or a multi-appellation tasting journey.

What's included on all Loire Valley wine tours

  • Expert English-speaking wine guide with certified Loire Valley wine knowledge.
  • Wine tastings at 2–3 selected wineries with all tasting fees included.
  • Comfortable air-conditioned transport with Tours hotel or meeting point pick-up.
  • Vineyard and village stops with expert commentary throughout.
  • Optional gourmet lunch in Chinon or another Loire Valley town.

When to visit

Loire Valley wine tours run year-round. Harvest season (late September to mid-October) is the most exciting time to visit — the Cabernet Franc is often among the last to be picked and the atmosphere in the cellars is festive and welcoming.

Spring and early summer offer flowering vines and beautiful countryside. Autumn also brings magnificent foliage in the vineyard hillsides and along the Loire river banks.
