The small port town of Cherbourg makes for a perfect starting point for a private tour to the Normandy D-DAY landing beaches. On our private shore excursions from Cherbourg we will come and pick you up directly at your Cruise ship.

Meet your English speaking guide who is a local expert in world war II and who will go over the itinerary and program of the day with you. Our small group shore excursions will head to the Pointe du Hoc, a breathtaking cliff offering lunar landscapes and a magnificent viewpoint over the English Channel. Given the toughness of the operation, the Pointe du Hoc was given to Rangers to land upon.

The battle was rough, as the Pointe du Hoc had been built as a key point of the Atlantic Wall by the Germans – it was the highest point between Utah beach and Omaha beach and provided a great observation spot to notice any unfriendly arrivals from the sea. Follow your tour guide on the site as you will be able to see an artillery battery there and feel as if it was still this faithful June morning.

End the tour with a stop at the Normandy American Cemetery. Located in Colleville-sur-Mer, on the site of the temporary American St. Laurent Cemetery, established by the U.S. First Army on June 8, 1944 as the first American cemetery on European soil in World War II.

Here you will have some time to walk around and pay homage but also visit the Visitor Center that provides a fuller array of visitor services to put the D-Day landings in perspective as one of the greatest military achievements in history.

Another great option from Cherbourg is a full day tour to Mont Saint Michel. The Mont Saint Michel is an island off the coast of Normandy, in the English Channel, and is one of the best Normandy full day private tours you can choose. It is located about 1 kilometer from the shore and sits in a bay that sees some of the biggest tides in Europe. A few years ago, it got linked to the mainland by a bridge that gets flooded during high tides a few times a year only.

The first church was built on the in 709 at the request of Archangel Michael. A couple of hundred years later, a small group of Benedictines settled there permanently and the church was enlarged. The first monastery was carved in the rock in the 11th century and gradually got bigger and bigger over the following centuries. In the medieval time, it quickly became an important destination for pilgrims, just like Santiago de Compostela in Spain.
