Located about one hour from Toulouse, the fortified city of Carcassonne is one of the most famous historical landmarks in France. The citadel stands on a hill overlooking the Aude River and has been inhabited since ancient times.
A UNESCO World Heritage Fortress
The Cité de Carcassonne is surrounded by nearly 3 km of fortified walls and more than 50 towers, forming one of the largest and best-preserved medieval fortresses in Europe.
Its outstanding architecture and preservation led to its classification as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.
Walk Through Medieval Streets
During the visit, travelers can explore the narrow cobbled streets inside the fortified city, admire stone houses and discover monuments such as the Basilica of Saint-Nazaire and the Comtal Castle.
A Fortress with a Long History
Carcassonne has been occupied since Roman times and later became an important stronghold during the Middle Ages. The citadel was extensively restored in the 19th century by architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, whose work helped preserve the site we admire today.
