Welcome to Nantes, one of the most dynamic cities of France. This artst city located on the banks of the River Loire was founded by the Celts and a long time part of the Duchy of Brittany. The mid-sized city of Nantes is located in the north-western part of France, close to the Atlantic Ocean and about 340 kilometers (215 miles) south-west of Paris. Coined as the hub of Western France, it was the historic capital of the Duchy of Brittany. Today it is the Capital of the Pays de La Loire region.
A bit of History
The City of Nantes has always been an important commercial harbor with its River Port and the fact that the Ocean was just a few miles away. During the 16th century and even more the 17th century, Nantes rapidly became one of the major ports of France. Coastal Navigation and export of local goods such as salt, local wines and fabrics dominated the local economy. The import of sugar, rum and tobacco from the French West Indies ment that Nantes shipowners began trading african slaves in the early 1700's.
The abolition of the slave trade as well as the French Revolution resulted in an economic decline but the city was able to recover thanks to the industrial revolution mainly in the shipbuilding and food processing activities. During World War II, the city was bombed late 1943 to destroy the industrial facilities. The Germans left the city in the beginning of August 1944 and it was swiftly reclaimed by the local resistance, the French Forces and the U.S Army.
Since the 1990's, Nantes has developed a very rich cultural scene and a great example of this is the former factory of the Legendary Lu Biscuits that has been transformed in a multifaceted arts venue that attracts many acts from all over. The venue includes a national stage, an exhibition hall, a bar & restaurant and even Turkish Baths.
Thing to see & do in Nantes

At a crossroad between Jules Verne and Leonardo de Vinci, these urban sculptures are a life-time experience for children and parents alike.
Other important sights to visit while in Nantes include the St Peter and Paul Cathedral with its interior built in the local tufa stone and that houses the tomb of Francis II. After a short drive, reach the Muscadet wine producing region located at the western end of the Loire Valley. The name of Muscadet wine is quite unusual as it is said that it means a wine that has a musk like taste.
The main grape variety used in the making of this wine is known as Melon de Bourgogne and it is the Dutch, who were quite active on the wine market in the 17th century, that requested that this grape be planted here. From the wines made in those days, the Dutch would distill it and transform it into eau-de-vie which was then shipped to northern Europe.
Once you have reached the wine growing region, your private tour will take you to the visit of one of the most famous wineries of the area. This family owned estate produces some of the most fragrant and delicate white wines of the area.
The very old vines, some having been planted in 1937, are deeply rooted in the local terroir that brings to the wine its minerality and freshness. During harvest time, all grapes are hand picked to insure a high standard of quality. Here, you will find out about the wine making process and participate in a wine tasting session.
After the visit, you will have the opportunity to feast on local specialties in a selected restaurant (meal & drinks are not included in price). This ancient Inn is located in an old vineyard house set in the middle of the vines.
