Rocamadour is one of the most dramatic villages in France, clinging to a limestone cliff overlooking the Alzou canyon. The village rises in several levels, with medieval streets at the bottom, the sanctuary complex halfway up the cliff, and a castle dominating the summit.
A Medieval Pilgrimage Destination
Since the 12th century, Rocamadour has been one of the great pilgrimage sites of Europe, attracting kings, nobles, and travelers drawn by its sanctuary dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
The Sanctuary and the Black Madonna
At the heart of the religious complex lies the Chapel of Notre-Dame, home to the famous Black Madonna statue, an object of devotion believed to have miraculous powers.
