Program & Itinerary
Meet your English Speaking Driver/Guide who is a local Expert of Paleolithic Art
Upon arrival at the meeting point, you will be welcomed by your English speaking guide who will be waiting with a sign bearing the name of the tour and with the Ophorus logo on it. Also, all our guides have a nominative badge so that it will be easy for you to recognize them.
Once you have met your guide, he/she will go over the program and itinerary of the day with you. Then, board your comfortable, air conditioned Mercedes minivan and begin to make your way to visit Lascaux IV Center of Parietal Art.
All our vehicles are equipped with an on board P/A system which means that everyone will hear the guide's commentary during driving time, even if you are seated in the back of the van! Also, we have bottled water at your disposal and you can use our free wifi as you travel from one destination to another.
Depart for Lascaux IV Museum
Discover brand-new Lascaux IV International Center of Parietal Art. The museum is a triumph of technology: unlike any other cave visits, Lascaux 4 employs different set designs, displays, state-of-the-art interactive workshops and immersive technology to bring it to life. For the very first time, all of Lascaux cave is revealed. This new center features an interactive gallery experience that blends Art, History and Culture with intelligence and sensitivity. At the heart of the experience you will discover a life size, state of the art facsimile cave that reveals the wonders of Lascaux as they were first seen.
The museum in 2018 was listed on Time Magazine’s 100 Greatest Places to visit saying: “The Snohetta-designed complex features some 600 prehistoric paintings and 1,000 engravings, all painstakingly re-created by a team of two dozen artists working from physical castings and advanced 3-D digital scans or the original artwork”!
After the visit and some time for personal discovery, the tour will also take you along the Vezere Valley for stops in Les Eyzies or Saint Léon sur Vézère village. After a short stop in the village we will return to Sarlat.

What is the main difference between Lascaux II and Lascaux IV?
Lascaux II cave is the first replica that was made of the original Lascaux Cave (Lascaux I). We still organise private tours to Lascaux II cave as there is a special ambiance that one can feel as you visit. Lascaux II cave visit only presents 2 of the main rooms of the original cave but this does mean that you see most of the Paleolithic Art. On this site, there is nothing but the cave to visit.
Lascaux IV is the most recent replica of the original cave. The replica presents the original cave in its entirety and has used all the latest technology to make the Paleolithic Art look completely identical. The cave is located withing the International Center of Paleolithic Art which means that you have other possibilities. You will begin with the tour of the Cave and then will access different rooms that questions the place Lascaux has in cave art and its links with contemporary creation. -
Do you need to do a Tour or can Lascaux IV be self guided?
Whether you book the tour through us or independently, you have to take the tour of the cave. If you book the tour through our company, you will be introduced by one of our expert guides to the visit of the cave. More important, we pre-book the tour for our small groups and have a direct access to the main attraction. Booking with us means you do not wait in line.
However, please note that English tours of the Caves are very limited in number, most of the visits are in French.
Your guide will explain the cave before and after the tour as simultaneous translation in the cave is strictly forbidden. -
Where can we buy tickets for Lascaux IV?
For the tickets, no problem, we have you covered. As the main tour operator of the Dordogne we have a partnership with Lascaux IV that enables us to offer our clients fast track access to the visits. -
What is the temperature inside Lascaux IV?
Even though you will be visiting a replica, the inside temperature of the cave is exactly the same as in the original one - 13° Celsius, 56° Fahrenheit. It is therefore suggested to wear warm clothes for the visit.
