Meet your English Speaking Driver/Guide who is a local Expert of the Dordogne

Upon arrival at the meeting point, you will be welcomed by your English speaking guide who will be waiting with a sign bearing the name of the tour and with the Ophorus logo on it. Also, all our guides have a nominative badge so that it will be easy for you to recognize them.

Once you have met your guide, he/she will go over the program and itinerary of the day with you. Then, board your comfortable, air conditioned Mercedes minivan and begin to make your way to visit Padirac & Rocamadour.

All our vehicles are equipped with an on board P/A system which means that everyone will hear the guide's commentary during driving time, even if you are seated in the back of the van! Also, we have bottled water at your disposal and you can use our free wifi as you travel from one destination to another.

One of the most stunning visits of the area: Padirac Chasm

After a drive of just over an hour, arrive in Padirac. Experience a unique visit of one of the most extraordinary natural phenomena of the region as you plunge in an unexpected underground world. The chasm itself is 103 m (338 ft) deep, with a diameter of approximately 35 meters (115 ft). The flooded network of Padirac Chasm is the second longest in the world after those located in the Yucatan province of Mexico. The visit of this vertiginous chasm begins with a 75 meter descent via a lift before actually entering the cave system. Following the descent, enjoy a peaceful boat ride on the mysterious subterranean River. Then, disembark and walk along a path that will take you through large caves decorated with stunning gigantic limestone concretions. After the walk, you will return by boat to your original departure point and take the lift back up to reach the outside world.

Rocamadour: A Castle set above a sanctuary set above a village

After the visit of Padirac, board the minivan and head to the nearby village of Rocamadour. Miraculous rock, collection of tales, legends and beliefs, sanctuary of the Black Virgin, pilgrimage site: the Village of Rocamadour is all of this at the same time. The old medieval houses, the towers and fortifications, the oratories all tumble along the steep cliff that dominates the Alzou Canyon. The whole site is topped off by the castle and its dungeon and the seven sanctuaries. Your guide will certainly stop here for a breathtaking view of the whole site that make for fantastic photo opportunities.

Depending on your time of arrival, you will either follow a guided walking tour of the village or enjoy some free time for lunch. Rocamadour is without a doubt one of the most beautiful villages of the area. Classified as a Unesco World Heritage site as it is located on the way to Santiago de Compostela (St James Way), the main attraction of the village lies in its sanctuaries especially that of Notre Dame that bears a statue of the Black Virgin.

The visit of the village can be painful for those with walking problems but please note that there is a possibility of accessing the sanctuaries by lift (tickets not included in price). For lunch, there are many restaurants & snacks to be found in the village and your guide will make the adequate suggestions depending on what type of meal you are looking for.

Other great trips that can be taken to local villages include our private tours to Saint Cirq Lapopie, Collonges la Rouge or to the small villages of the Dordogne valley. See below for recommendations.

  • What happens if we do not find the meeting point for our Shared Tour from Sarlat?

You have to be at the meeting point at least 10 minutes prior to tour departure. If you are having difficulties finding the meeting point you must call us on our office number +33 556 152 609 so that we may help you find the exact area. Please note that tours leave on time and if you are not there at the designated area and indicated time the driver/guide will leave. Please refer to our terms and conditions for more information.
  • What type of vehicles are used during a shared tour from Sarlat?

Our company uses only Mercedes Vito Tourer 8 seater minivans that are recent, comfortable and fully equipped including individual A/C, shaded windows, large leg space and on board P/A system for commentaries by the guide.
  • Who conducts these Dordogne shared tours from Sarlat?

We only employ fully accredited, licensed tour guides that are also the drivers for all tours that need visits to be conducted by certified guides. Good examples are: the visit of the National Prehistory Museum, guided walking tours in villages such as Rocamadour, visit of historical monuments and so on. In the Dordogne, all our guides are experts in History & Culture. All have a large experience in Paleolithic Art and conduct tours in both Caves & Castles.
  • How strenuous is this tour?

This tour includes some walking on uneven surfaces as well as staircases and is not at all adapted to persons with walking disabilities.

Padirac Chasm has some staircases and then the descent is made with elevators. Once at the bottom of the Chasm, there is a short walk before you reach the boats. Then you will need to be able to board small boats that can take up to 8 passengers maximum. The boat ride is followed by a walk within the Chasm that includes uneven terrain, stairs as well as small climbs. You must be in good physical condition to follow this visit. It is possible to wait outside the chasm if you do not feel comfortable with the physical requirements of the tour.

Rocamadour is a medieval village. This implies that there are cobblestone streets that can be difficult to walk on. Also, the sanctuary is located in the middle part of the village and to reach it implies that you will need to climb stairs. However, there is a possibility of taking an elevator but this will be at your own expense.
  • What is the temperature inside Padirac Chasm?

The temperature inside Padirac Chasm is quite cool: 14° Celsius, 56° Farenheit all year round. It is best advised to wear warm clothing (fleece, sweatshirt, cardigan or shawl). It is also quite damp inside which increases the cold feeling. Finally, drips of water fall from the roof.
  • Will we have to wait in line to enter Padirac?

No waiting in line for our small group tour to Padirac. We have taken care of all bookings and tickets just for you.
  • How does the tour of Padirac Chasm take place?

When you arrive at the Entrance Pavilion, you will be given your exploration companion, an innovative and interactive multimedia guide in 6 languages for adults (French, English, German, Dutch, Japanese and Spanish) and 4 languages for children (French, English, Spanish and Dutch); it will be with you for the duration of your tour.

After going down into the chasm 103 metres below the surface of the earth, in a lift or on foot, you take a boat along the underground river for a trip through majestic galleries in the company of a boatman-guide. You will see the Grande Pendeloque, a giant stalactite 60 metres high. You will disembark and continue on foot towards the Lac des Gours, and the Salle du Grand Dôme, which has a dome that rises 94 metres high. There, you can admire a multitude of concretions, candelabra, and limestone cascades, shaped by nature over millions of years.
  • Can I take photos during the tour in Padirac Chasm?

Flash-free photography and filming are tolerated without flash during your visit on foot but are prohibited during the boat trip for reasons of safety and comfort of visit.

Warning: Selfie sticks are strictly forbidden everywhere on the site for safety reasons.

  • Where will we have time for lunch during this Dordogne full day trip?

You will have plenty of time for lunch in Rocamadour. The village offers a large number of options from small snacks, local restaurants to more high end semi-gastronomic venues.
  • What are the top attractions to visit while in Rocamadour?

First of all, you will be with your own guide that will introduce you to this marvellous village. During your guided walking tour, discover the sanctuary where you will visit the different chapels, admire the Black Virgin and breath taking views. You will then have time for personal discovery & lunch. This free time will allow you to stroll the medieval streets, shop for local souvenirs or have a relaxed coffee break.
