Program & Itinerary
Loire Valley Castles: Full-Day Guided Tour of Chenonceau & Chambord from Tours
Embark on an unforgettable day exploring two of the Loire Valley’s most iconic châteaux with an expert English-speaking guide. Your journey begins with pickup in front of the Tours Tourism Office, ideally located in the city center near the train station and within easy walking distance of most hotels.
Meet your knowledgeable driver-guide, a specialist in Loire Valley history and architecture, who will introduce the day’s program. Then settle into a premium, air-conditioned vehicle equipped with an onboard P.A. system and set off along the scenic Loire Valley château route.
Morning: Guided Visit of Château de Chenonceau
Your morning is dedicated to the magnificent Château de Chenonceau, often called the “Château des Dames.” Gracefully spanning the River Cher, this Renaissance masterpiece is inseparable from the powerful women who shaped its history, including Diane de Poitiers and Catherine de Medici.
Originally built in the Middle Ages, the castle was rebuilt after a fire and later acquired by King Francis I. Diane de Poitiers, the favorite of King Henri II, transformed Chenonceau and commissioned the arched bridge that crosses the Cher. After the king’s death, Catherine de Medici reclaimed the château, expelling Diane and turning Chenonceau into a place of grand receptions and court festivities—here, in 1560, France’s first fireworks display is said to have illuminated the sky.
In the centuries that followed, Chenonceau passed through the hands of influential owners such as Louise Dupin, who hosted one of the Enlightenment’s great literary salons with guests like Voltaire, Montesquieu, and Rousseau (who served as her secretary). In 1913, the Menier family, famous chocolatiers, bought the château and still oversee its preservation today.
With your guide, explore richly furnished rooms, tapestries, and paintings by artists such as Rubens, Tintoretto, Veronese, Poussin, Van Dyck, and others. Highlights include Diane de Poitiers’ bedroom, the Green Study, the long Galerie over the river, and the château’s historic kitchens. After the guided visit, enjoy some free time to stroll through the formal gardens of Diane de Poitiers and Catherine de Medici, or to photograph the château from different viewpoints along the riverbank.
Free Time for Lunch
Following your morning at Chenonceau, your guide will drive you to a nearby village or town where you’ll have free time for lunch (at your own expense). Depending on your preferences, your guide can recommend brasseries, bistros, or restaurants where you can sample local specialties and Loire Valley wines.
Afternoon: Guided Exploration of Château de Chambord
In the afternoon, continue to Château de Chambord, the grandest of the Loire Valley castles and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Set in the heart of the Sologne forest, Chambord was commissioned by King Francis I in the early 16th century as an extravagant hunting lodge and a symbol of royal power, rather than a permanent residence.
The château’s architecture reflects the influence of the Italian Renaissance and features a massive central keep flanked by four corner towers. With more than 440 rooms, 282 fireplaces, and 84 staircases, Chambord is an extraordinary testament to royal ambition and architectural innovation.
At the heart of the keep lies the famous double helix staircase, attributed by tradition to Leonardo da Vinci’s inspiration. Composed of two intertwined flights that never meet, the staircase rises through three levels and is naturally lit from above by a lantern tower, creating a striking visual centerpiece.
During your 1.5-hour guided tour, discover the main apartments, ceremonial rooms, and the central staircase, while your guide explains how the château evolved from Francis I’s reign through that of Louis XIV, when the “Sun King” brought the residence to its peak splendor. Learn how the estate later passed through various owners before becoming the property of the French state in the 20th century.
Do not miss a walk along the rooftop terraces, where chimneys, towers, and lanterns form an almost whimsical skyline. From here, enjoy panoramic views over the surrounding parkland and forests, and appreciate the full scale of this monumental château.
Return to Tours
After your visit to Chambord, relax on the drive back to Tours as your guide answers final questions and shares additional anecdotes about the Loire Valley. You’ll be dropped off at the Tourism Office, returning with lasting memories of Chenonceau, Chambord, and the rich history of the French Renaissance.
This full-day guided tour is ideal for travelers who want an in-depth yet seamless experience of two of the Loire’s most celebrated castles, with expert commentary, comfortable transport, and a well-paced itinerary.
