The Ideal Way to Experience the Strasbourg Christmas Markets !
It was in Strasbourg in 1570 that the very first edition of the oldest Christmas market in Europe took place, then called the “Christkindelsmärik”. Ever since, Strasbourg has perpetuated the tradition of a an authentic, warm and generous Alsatian Christmas. More than 300 stalls are spread out over 12 locations under the glow of the city’s illuminations, making Strasbourg one of the largest Christmas markets in Europe.
There are eleven markets throughout central Strasbourg, including just outside the train station, outside the Cathedral, on Place Broglie, on Place Kléber (with the largest real Christmas Tree in France grown specifically for the market), at Place Corbeau by the Alsatian Museum, at Place Gutenberg where there’s a guest visitor market each year, in Petite France overlooking the River L’Ill, at Place d’Austerlitz specializing in only foods and drinks, outside the Temple Neuf Church, and the furthest at Cité de la Musique et de la Danse next to the ice skating rink.
Today, follow your guide on a Christmas market tour that will take you to several different markets that are located all over the town. The selection of the markets visited will be made in the morning depending on your different wishes as to what you would like to see, discover or purchase as each market has its specialty. Enter a winter wonderland and take in some of the history and culture of Alsace. You will stroll through the city as you tour the markets.
You have 2 possibilities for timing - one in the morning so as to avoid the crowds and the second at the end of the day so as to admire all the Christmas lights! During your Christmas market stroll indulge yourself in a 'Vin Chaud' wine tasting of the local mulled wine. It will also be time to shop for magnificent decorations, try local delicacies, buy souvenirs and Christmas decorations.

FAQ
-
What type of clothes should I wear?
If you are on the morning tour, check the daily weather before starting out on your Christmas Market tour of Strasbourg. If you are on the late afternoon tour, wear warm clothes as it can get quite cold once the sun has set. -
When is the best time to visit the Strasbourg Christmas Markets?
We have two options for visits of the Strasbourg Christmas Markets. The first option is the morning tour that we have put in place for those that wish to avoid the large crowds. In the morning there are less visitors and you will have more time to shop for decorations. It is also much easier to taste the local delicacies.
The evening option is of course the most popular one as all the Christmas illuminations give a special Winter Wonderland feel to the city of Strasbourg. Ideally, if you would like to book this option, then we recommend that you choose a week day as there are less visitors than on week-ends. If you don't have a choice and are only in Strasbourg on the week end, then your best option is Friday or Sunday evenings. If you are only there on a Saturday and absolutely want to follow the late afternoon visit, be prepared to not be alone on the market! -
Which Christmas Market will I visit during this private tour?
There are 11 Christmas markets in Strasbourg that spread out all across town. There are large Christmas Markets such as the ones located on Cathedral Square, Place Kléber, Place Gutenberg or Place Broglie. Then you have smaller ones such as the Christmas markets of Place du Marché au Poisson, Place Saint Thomas or Place Grimmeisen. What is important to understand is that each market has its specialty even though you will find christmas decorations, mulled wine and local delicacies in all of them.
Your tour will include the Christmas Markets that best fit what exactly you are looking for. Thus, if food & wine is your thing, then a visit to the Place Broglie Christmas Market will be the perfect destination. Here, there are over 100 stalls among which many serve great local food & mulled wines. If you are looking for local handicraft then the Market located on Place du Temple Neuf will be your first destination.
As such, the best thing to do before you begin your market stroll is to speak with your guide. Knowing what you are looking for will allow her/him to take you to the best Christmas Market that is adapted to your wishes. If you do not have any preferences, then just follow along and your guide will take you on a tour of her/his preferred markets and stalls.
