Head for the Graves wine producing region
Departing from Bordeaux, you'll embark on a scenic drive in the comfort of your air-conditioned minivan, whisking you away from the bustling city to the serene countryside plains and rolling hills of the left bank wine producing area. This is the heart of Bordeaux's famous wine region, where vineyards bearing the esteemed Graves and Pessac-Léognan AOC designation flourish. Each winery you visit showcases distinct soil features and a proud winemaking heritage, making every sip an expression of centuries-old craftsmanship.
The Graves region holds a significant place in Bordeaux's wine history, as it is the birthplace of the region's viticulture traditions. Over 2,000 years ago, the Romans first planted grapes in this fertile land. The name "Graves" itself originates from the deep layers of gravel and stone that contribute to the unique character of the wines produced here.
Your first stop on this personalized half-day tour will take you to one of the local estates, where a Grand Cru Chateau awaits your arrival. A pre-arranged appointment ensures a warm welcome and an exclusive tour, where you'll have the opportunity to taste a variety of carefully crafted vintages. Throughout the visit, your knowledgeable Ophorus guide will accompany you, ready to answer any questions and share fascinating insights about the wines and the region. Whether you're curious about the history, winemaking techniques, flavors, aromas, or food and wine pairings, your guide will be delighted to provide you with a wealth of information, enriching your wine experience.
Discover the Pessac-Léognan wine producing region
Continuing your journey, you'll discover the Pessac-Léognan wine producing area, a relatively new appellation that was once part of the Graves. Recognized for its exceptional red and white wines, this region obtained its own communal appellation in 1987. The red wines of Pessac-Léognan showcase the classic Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc grape varieties, while the white wines enchant with their blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon grapes. The soil in this area bears similarities to that of Graves, characterized by gravel, stone, and sand, imparting unique flavors to the wines.
Among the most prestigious wineries in Pessac-Léognan is the iconic Chateau Haut-Brion, which holds the distinguished title of 1er Grand Cru Classé in the renowned 1855 classification. Remarkably, it stands as the sole chateau located outside the Medoc and Sauternes wine producing regions, testament to its exceptional quality and historical significance.
Arriving at a carefully selected winery in the region, you'll have the opportunity to indulge in a delightful wine tasting experience, sampling a range of exquisite white and red wines. Let your senses be captivated by the aromas, flavors, and textures that reflect the terroir and winemaking expertise of Pessac-Léognan.
Return to Bordeaux
As the tour concludes, your private Bordeaux wine journey comes to an end, and you'll make your way back to Bordeaux in the comfort of your minivan. Reflect on the extraordinary flavors and discoveries of the day, cherishing the memories created during this immersive half-day tour in the captivating Graves wine region.

How many Bordeaux wines will I taste during this private half day Graves tour?
Unlike other wine tasting sessions that you might have followed around the world, the tastings in Bordeaux are not as generous in terms of pours . The amount of wine tasted is not what many would expect but here it is all about elegance, fruit, quality, aromas and flavors rather than quantity.
Each Chateau will have you taste their premium wine and what we call the 'second' wine of the estate. Sometimes, Chateau owners also add a tasting of some other wine if they happen to be the owners of another Chateau in Bordeaux. So basically, at each winery visited it will be 2 to maximum 4 wines tasted. In the Graves region, many Chateaus produce both reds and whites which mean you can expect to taste more wines than in the other wine regions of Bordeaux. -
Is it possible to visit Château Haut Brion?
Yes, absolutely. Château Haut Brion is open to visitors however the groups are limited in number and visits do not take place everyday. The tour of Haut Brion can be combined with a tour to La Mission Haut Brion. If you would like to visit this winery, don't hesitate to reach out and our team of travel advisors will do the rest. Important information though, as visits to this winery are in high demand, you will need to plan your visit months ahead! -
Why is the Graves wine region named that way?
The name Graves, which does sound a bit weird in Englis, actually refers to the soil of this wine producing region of the Bordeaux vineyards. This area is actually where the Bordeaux wines were born. Located to the south of the City of Bordeaux, on the left bank of the River Garonne, the Graves wine region is characterized by the Gravel soil on which the vineyard is planted. Originating from the Occitan language that was spoken during the medieval times Gravas, la "graves" (it is feminin word) is mainly composed of Gravel as well as more or less sand and clay. -
What type of wine is Graves?
Graves is a very interesting Bordeaux wine region to visit as it is the only one where you can wine taste the three main wine types of Bordeaux - reds, whites and sweet wines. The wine production is dominated by the red wines that are typically blended with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet France to which winemakers sometimes add Petit Verdot and/or Malbec. The typical white wines of the Graves wine region are dry and blended with Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon grape varieties. -
What type of wine is Pessac-Léognan?
Pessac-Léognan wines resemble in a way those of Médoc wine region. The main grape varieties used in the blend of the wines are Cabernet Sauvignon & Merlot that bring to these wines a subtle mix of power, delicateness and refinement. As for the whites, the blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon grapes bring complexity, freshness, intensity and harmony to these wines. The Pessac-Léognan appellation includes all of the Crus Classés of the Graves wine region that produce reds and/or dry whites.
