Program & Itinerary
Private Full-Day Wine Tour from Bordeaux: Graves, Pessac-Léognan & Sauternes
This private 8-hour tour explores three of Bordeaux's most distinctive wine appellations south of the city — the ancient Graves region, its prestigious sub-appellation Pessac-Léognan, and the legendary Sauternes. From structured Cabernet Sauvignon reds to elegant dry whites and the world's most celebrated sweet wines, this tour offers an unmatched range of Bordeaux's finest in a single day.
Pickup is from your hotel or accommodation in Bordeaux. Travel throughout in a premium air-conditioned Mercedes minivan (up to 8 guests) with an onboard PA system for clear expert commentary.
The Graves & Pessac-Léognan — Birthplace of Bordeaux Viticulture
The Graves wine region takes its name from the deep gravelly and stony soils that have shaped its wines for nearly 2,000 years — making it the oldest continuously cultivated wine-producing area in Bordeaux, first planted by the Romans. These soils create ideal drainage and mineral conditions for producing wines of exceptional depth and ageing potential.
Your morning visit is to a carefully selected Grand Cru Château in the Graves appellation, where a guided tour of the vineyards and cellar is followed by a tasting of red and dry white wines — the combination unique to this part of Bordeaux.
The tour then continues into Pessac-Léognan, established as its own AOC in 1987 and home to all 16 Crus Classés de Graves. This compact appellation produces exceptional wines from Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc, and Sémillon. Its most celebrated estate is Château Haut-Brion, the only property classified as 1er Grand Cru Classé outside the Médoc and Sauternes in the famous 1855 classification — a testament to its enduring and exceptional quality.
Free Time for Lunch & The Sauternes Appellation
After a free lunch at a local restaurant, the afternoon takes you into the Sauternes appellation, famed for producing some of the world's most sought-after sweet white wines. The crown jewel of this appellation is Château d'Yquem, classified as the sole Premier Grand Cru Classé Supérieur in the 1855 Sauternes classification — a category created specifically to honour its unrivalled quality.
The secret to Sauternes lies in a unique natural process: a benevolent fungus called Botrytis Cinerea, known as noble rot, forms on the Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc grapes in the morning mists, concentrating their sugars and developing extraordinary complexity. Warm, dry afternoons stop the rot from spreading further, creating the precise conditions required for late-harvest winemaking of unparalleled richness.
Your visit concludes with a guided tasting of Sauternes wines, revealing their signature flavours of honey, apricot, blossom, and toasted oak, alongside insights into food pairing with these exceptional golden nectars.

Additional information
This private Graves, Pessac-Léognan, and Sauternes wine tour is ideal for wine enthusiasts seeking to explore Bordeaux beyond the famous Médoc and Saint-Émilion regions. It suits white wine lovers wanting to taste both world-class dry whites and legendary sweet Sauternes, couples and small groups interested in the historical birthplace of Bordeaux viticulture, and travelers curious about the unique noble rot winemaking process.
The tour appeals to foodies interested in wine and food pairings, dessert wine collectors seeking Sauternes from prestigious estates, and first-time visitors wanting comprehensive exposure to red, dry white, and sweet white Bordeaux styles.
With visits to Château Haut-Brion's appellation and expert guidance on three distinct wine categories, it's perfect for those who value diversity, educational depth, and access to lesser-known but equally prestigious Left Bank appellations in one full-day
In regards to the protection of the environment, we will no longer provide plastic bottles of water during our tours. You are kindly advised to bring your own. Water and refills are available at the wineries, museums and attractions visited.
Please note: In France, snacks are usually not provided during wine tastings to preserve the purity of the wine's flavor. We recommend having a good breakfast or lunch beforehand.
