Program & Itinerary
Experience the enchanting beauty of Bordeaux, known as the Sleeping Beauty, on this exclusive private tour. Immerse yourself in its rich heritage as you explore this UNESCO World Heritage Site, celebrated as a "City of Art and History." Discover a captivating blend of 18th-century architecture, making Bordeaux home to one of the largest collections in Europe.
Stroll through the city and marvel at its architectural marvels, including the neoclassical Grand Theater, the esteemed Golden Triangle district, and the splendid Rohan Palace, presently serving as Bordeaux Town Hall. As you embark on this walking tour, be captivated by the remarkable 'Place de la Bourse' with its harmonious architecture, intricate sculptures, and captivating water mirror, symbolizing the profound connection between the city and the Garonne River.
With an accredited and knowledgeable tour guide, you have the flexibility to tailor the itinerary to your preferences while ensuring you visit the iconic landmarks:
Rohan Palace: Delve into history as you visit the Rohan Palace, an architectural gem constructed between 1171 and 1784 under the patronage of Ferdinand Maximilien Mériadec de Rohan. Once a revolutionary court and an imperial palace, it has been the Town Hall of Bordeaux since 1835. Behind its stunning Louis XVI style facade lies one of France's most exquisite staircases, a masterpiece of stereotomy. The palace stands majestically opposite the Saint Andrew Cathedral and Pey Berland tower.
Golden Triangle: The Golden Triangle district encompasses Cours Georges-Clemenceau, Cours de l'Intendance, and the Allées de Tourny, forming a triangle that culminates in the squares of Gambetta, Comedie, and Tourny. Historically, this area housed luxurious shops and esteemed financial institutions. In the 18th century, Bordeaux's affluent individuals constructed opulent private mansions, lavish residences designed for a single family and their staff.
Place de la Comédie: Immerse yourself in the grandeur of Place de la Comédie, an awe-inspiring square nestled between the iconic Grand Theater of Bordeaux and the facing houses. The square's centerpiece is the impressive portico featuring 12 Corinthian columns, a testament to the architectural genius of Victor Louis. Inaugurated in 1780, the theater's sloping ground originally accommodated carriages inside the colonnade. Today, it is recognized as a Historical Monument and serves as the home of the National Opera of Bordeaux.
Grand Theatre: Experience the splendor of the Grand Theatre of Bordeaux, inaugurated on April 7, 1780, after more than seven years of construction by architect Victor Louis. This neoclassical masterpiece features a majestic façade adorned with a portico of 12 Corinthian columns, topped with statues representing nine muses and three goddesses from Classical Mythology.
Place de la Bourse: Admire the elegant façade of the Royal Square, now known as Place de la Bourse, considered the pinnacle of architectural grace along the Bordeaux quays. Originally designed to accommodate a statue of Louis XV, the square's construction spanned over 25 years, overseen by two Intendants and three architects. Inspired by Mansart's works in Versailles, the square eventually saw the replacement of Louis XV's statue with the fountain of the Three Graces in 1792.
Explore further facets of Bordeaux by perusing our other walking tours, starting from Place des Quinconces and including visits to the historic Chartrons district, intertwined with Bordeaux's illustrious winemaking legacy, which we feature on our wine tours.
