Program & Itinerary
The medieval town of Sarlat hosts one of the biggest and best food markets in the Dordogne. On this 2 hour tour, visit on market day to experience the town at its most atmospheric. Meet your English speaking local guide, expert in Dordogne Culinary specialties.
Walk towards the Market and begin your discovery of the best produce of the Dordogne region.
Your first stop will be at a cheese cellar. Located in a 13th century Private Mansion in the heart of the Old Town of Sarlat, the building is listed as a historical monument. The building and especially the cellar is ideal for the ageing of the cheeses. With it's constant temperature of 10° to 12° Celsius all year round ( about 51.8°F), the ageing cellar allows us to diversify the number of cheeses. Upon arrival, you will be introduced to the cheese experts who will guide you through your tasting of 3 to 4 different cheeses.
Then continue your tour with a second stop at a family run local delicacies shop founded in 1973. Here, you will taste small toasts spread with foie gras from either duck or goose with a glass of sweet wine. You will also have the opportunity to savor a local tapas (meat product) rinsed with a tasting of a Red Bergerac wine. Finally, end your tasting with a local cheese called Trappe d'Echourgnac. Trappist cheese is pressed, uncooked, fermented by retro-rubbing or by using the “morge” scrubbing technique. End this stop with the experience of a walnut liqueur tasting.
Then follow your guide through the medieval streets of Sarlat. This walking tour allows your guide to point out all the local products of the season that arrive from all corners of the Dordogne. If you are lucky, it might be the season of strawberries, of which the Dordogne is famous for, and your guide will make sure that you have the opportunity to sample some.
Your next stop will be inside St Mary's church which houses the covered market. Even though this market is accessible on the other days as well, we stop here as there is a great opportunity to taste very different specialties. End this gourmet tour with another very popular local stop ! Rendez-vous at a local walnut cake producers stall. Walnut is a true specialty of the Dordogne. It is said that there are as many recipes as there are ducks and gees in the Dordogne, and that's a lot! Taste the local walnut cake (homemade by the Chef of the shop), the croquants - a dry and crunchy caramelized sugar biscuit like treat.

FAQ
-
Who conducts these Sarlat Gourmet Food tours?
Our Sarlat tours are conducted by one of our in-house licensed guides. They know perfectly the town of Sarlat and will answer any question that you might have - History, Culture & lifestyle. This morning, follow them through the Market on a food tour to taste some of the local produce. -
How strenuous is this tour?
This tour includes some walking around the medieval town of Sarlat, where you have still a large number of cobblestone streets. The tour lasts 2 hours and there are not many places to have a seat. -
How many specialities will I taste during this tour?
Depending on your guide, you will taste a number of specialties. Usually, we include tastings of local produce such as bread, cheese, ham or cured meat, foie gras, walnut based products and wine. Some guides have more affinities with local producers that bring their own produce so it might be that you will stop in different stalls. -
Can I buy some of the produce that we taste?
Yes, of course you can buy directly from the producers or shops where the tastings take place. After the tour, you will aslo have time to stroll and sample from other producers. One important thing to know is that you will need to have some cash with you as not many producers accept credit cards.
