Explore the Enchanting Saint Emilion: Cultural & Historical Walking Tour
Join your licensed tour guide at the village in front of the Saint Emilion tourism office for an immersive 2-hour walking tour of Saint Emilion village. This picturesque village has earned the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage site classification and offers a wealth of captivating facts, anecdotes, and unique experiences. Ideal for a delightful day trip, Saint Emilion is easily accessible from Bordeaux by train or car.
Discover the Fascinating History of Saint Emilion
Delve into the captivating history of Saint Emilion, a French medieval village that exudes unique charm. Born in Brittany in the 8th century, Emilian, a Benedictine monk, rose from humble beginnings to become the financial steward of the ruling count. Unfortunately, jealous rivals falsely accused him of thievery, seeking to discredit him in the eyes of his master. Seeking solace, Emilian retreated to a serene forest where he carved out a cave and dedicated his life to God. After performing numerous miracles and spreading goodness, the place he called home was named Saint Emilion in his honor following his passing in 767.
Visit the Enigmatic Underground Monolithic Cathedral
Embark on your half-day tour by exploring the renowned underground monolithic church, Saint Emilion's most famous monument. This awe-inspiring structure stretches an impressive 125 feet in length, 66 feet in width, and 36 feet in height. From the outside, one can only catch a glimpse of a few windows on the facade and a towering Gothic steeple reaching an astounding 174 feet. Carved out of solid rock, this monumental church, inspired by Benedictine monks, stands as Europe's largest monolithic cathedral.
As our licensed tour guides have the privilege of guiding visitors inside the monolithic church, you will embark on a private guided tour exclusively for you and your group. Upon entering, you will be greeted by a long gallery leading to an altar oriented towards the west, deviating from the Christian tradition of eastward orientation. The understated ornamentation contrasts with the valuable insights waiting to be discovered.
Following the exploration of the underground church, follow your guide through the enchanting narrow streets of the village. Marvel at the unique 68-meter-high bell tower, a testament to Saint Emilion's rich history, dating back to the 12th and 13th centuries. Ascending the 96 steps is a rewarding challenge, as it grants you a breathtaking panoramic view of the surrounding area, one of the most stunning vistas to behold.
Discover Other Notable Monuments
During your tour, your knowledgeable guide will point out other significant monuments, such as the Tower of the Kings, where the local wine brotherhood announces the commencement of the harvest each September. You will also visit the Collegiate Church with its captivating cloister, as well as the Cloitre des Cordeliers, where you can savor the local sparkling wine known as Crémant de Bordeaux.
Indulge in the World of Saint Emilion Wines
No visit to Saint Emilion is complete without a glimpse into the world-renowned Bordeaux wines. Learn about the prestigious Jurade and its connection to the history of Saint Emilion wines. In 1199, when John 'Lackland' ascended the English throne, he granted Saint Emilion the status of a free and independent commune through the 'Falaise Charter.' This charter allowed the town to be governed by a mayor, twelve Jurade members (the town council), and twelve advisors elected by notable individuals in the community. With vast powers, including the administration of justice, the council also regulated wine production and sales, and ceremoniously announced the beginning and end of grape harvests.
As you explore Saint Emilion, consider indulging in a wine tasting session featuring the renowned Saint Emilion wines or other exquisite wines from the Bordeaux region. Your expert guide, well-versed in all aspects of Bordeaux wine regions, can organize a personalized wine tour within the village, offering a delightful sensory experience.
Immerse yourself in the enchanting beauty, rich history, and world-class wines of Saint Emilion on this unforgettable walking tour.
