Depart from Bordeaux and Venture into the Right Bank Wine Region

Setting off from Bordeaux, a short and pleasant drive in our comfortable, air-conditioned minivan transports you away from the city to the idyllic countryside plains and rolling hills of the right bank wine producing area. This picturesque region is the heart of Bordeaux's renowned wine region, home to numerous vineyards bearing the prestigious Saint Emilion AOC designation. Each winery in this locality produces vintages with distinct soil characteristics, rooted in a long winemaking heritage.

Your first stop will be at a carefully selected local estate, a Grand Cru Chateau, where you will embark on a captivating visit and wine tasting session. Delve into the winery's history as a knowledgeable guide unveils the intricacies of the wine production process and shares intriguing anecdotes about the estate.

The wines you'll sample are skillfully crafted blends of Merlot grapes, boasting deep, bold flavors, complemented by other local grape varieties, particularly Cabernet Franc and, to a lesser extent, Cabernet Sauvignon. Your Ophorus guide, well-versed in the world of wines, will accompany you during the visit, providing an opportunity to address any queries you may have. Feel free to inquire about the history, techniques, flavors, aromas, or food and wine pairings to enhance your wine experience.

Explore the Charming Village of Saint-Emilion

Following the wine tasting session, your half-day tour continues with a guided walking tour through the captivating village of Saint-Emilion. Meander along the enchanting cobblestone streets of this medieval town, while your knowledgeable tour guide recounts the fascinating local history, from the days of the 8th-century hermit Emilion to the 19th-century mining galleries that still lie beneath the village.

The village boasts significant historical sites, including the Romanesque cloister and the Monolithic church, a remarkable 12th-century underground structure carved into limestone cliffs (not included on this tour but available on our private full-day Saint Emilion tour).

Saint Emilion's well-deserved UNESCO World Heritage status, bestowed upon it in 1999, is a testament to its charm and cultural significance. After the guided walk, enjoy some free time to explore the village at your own pace. Consider venturing into one of the numerous wine cellars for a continuation of your tasting journey. Finally, we'll return to Bordeaux, concluding the wine tour after a day filled with knowledge and appreciation for this renowned wine-producing region.

Dig Deeper into Saint-Emilion's Heritage

For those seeking additional insights into Saint-Emilion, below you will find more information about the village's heritage, vineyards, and typical grape varieties prevalent in the wines produced within this part of Bordeaux's right bank wine region.

The Legend of Emilion

The origins of Saint Emilion date back to the Roman Empire, but the story truly begins in the 8th century AD when a monk from Brittany sought refuge in a natural cave near the settlement of 'Ascum Bas.' Known as Saint Emilion, this humble hermit is believed to have performed miracles during his secluded life in Aquitaine. Word of his extraordinary powers spread, attracting pilgrims and followers from afar. The small settlement quickly grew into a religious center, and after the monk's passing, the town of Ascum Bas was renamed Saint Emilion to honor his memory.

Centuries of Wine Making and a Famous Monk

Perched atop a hill overlooking the Dordogne Valley, the captivating village of Saint Emilion showcases its picturesque rooftops and medieval stone buildings. This idyllic setting, coupled with a unique microclimate and fertile soil, has transformed the area into a haven for winemaking. While Saint Emilion's fame is partly attributed to the monk after whom it was named, the underground monolithic church of Saint-Emilion stands as the village's most emblematic monument.

Carved into a limestone cliff beneath the village, the church was constructed in the 12th century by the monks who inhabited the area. Its underground chambers and passageways served various purposes, including a chapel, a refuge, and a storage area for wine barrels. To this day, the church remains shrouded in mystery, with the identity of its original architects and builders, as well as the purpose of certain features, still unknown.

The Soils of Saint-Emilion Wine Region

The vineyards of Saint-Emilion boast diverse soils that contribute to the distinctive character of the wines produced in the region. Limestone and clay are the predominant soil types, each playing a crucial role in nurturing high-quality grapes for winemaking.

Limestone soils, referred to as "calcaire à astéries," consist of fossilized marine sediment, ensuring excellent drainage for the grapevines. Clay soils, on the other hand, retain more water and nutrients, fostering robust vine growth and grape development. Additionally, the Saint-Emilion vineyards contain gravel and sand, further enhancing drainage and water regulation.

The combination of limestone and clay soils is particularly favorable for the cultivation of Merlot grapes, the primary variety grown in the Saint-Emilion region. Merlot thrives in soils with optimal drainage, balanced water availability, and nutrient richness, resulting in exceptional wines.

Immerse yourself in the captivating allure of Saint Emilion, where wines steeped in history and terroir await your discovery. Our half-day wine tour from Bordeaux promises an enchanting experience that seamlessly blends the magic of this beloved village with the delights of its renowned wines. Book your tour today to embark on an unforgettable journey through time and taste.
