Program & Itinerary
Cassis, the Calanques & Provence Wine: A Full Day from Aix-en-Provence
This full-day private tour from Aix-en-Provence takes you to one of the most beautiful corners of the French Mediterranean coast. From the charming fishing port of Cassis to a boat ride through the dramatic Calanques National Park, a scenic drive along the Route des Crêtes, and a wine tasting at a local estate, every hour of the day is filled with something exceptional. Your English-speaking guide picks you up directly from your hotel in Aix-en-Provence and takes care of everything from start to finish.
Cassis Village: Cliffs, Harbor & Provençal Life
Your day begins in Cassis, a beautifully situated fishing village nestled between white limestone cliffs, a medieval castle, and a turquoise bay. Your guide leads you on a walking tour of the village, through the portside streets, past local boutiques offering authentic Provençal products, and into the quieter backstreets away from the harbor. If your visit falls on a Wednesday or Friday morning, the local market is also on the route — a perfect introduction to the flavors and produce of the region.
The Calanques: A Boat Ride Through a Natural Wonder
The Calanques are among the most spectacular natural landscapes in France — a series of narrow inlets carved into sheer white limestone cliffs that plunge directly into crystal-clear turquoise water, stretching along the rugged coastline between Cassis and Marseille. Protected as a National Park, they are best experienced from the water, where their true scale becomes fully apparent.
Your group boards a local boat from Cassis harbor for a one-hour panoramic cruise through the most striking inlets of the park. Your guide provides context on the geology, ecology, and history of the Calanques as the boat moves through the landscape.
Practical note on the boat ride
Calanques boat departures are subject to sea conditions and seasonal scheduling. In the rare event that a boat excursion is not available on the day of your tour, your guide will arrange an alternative clifftop viewpoint experience, which offers equally dramatic panoramas over the inlets.
Free Time & Lunch in Cassis
After the boat ride, free time is built into the itinerary for lunch and personal exploration. Cassis has an excellent selection of restaurants and bistros along the harbor and in the village streets, with fish and seafood being the local specialties. Your guide is happy to recommend options to suit your tastes and budget, and can assist with reservations if needed.
Cap Canaille & the Route des Crêtes
As you leave Cassis, the tour follows the Route des Crêtes — a dramatic cliff road offering some of the finest coastal panoramas in southern France. The route leads to Cap Canaille, the tallest maritime cliff in France, which drops nearly 400 metres directly into the Mediterranean Sea. Several viewpoints along the way provide the opportunity to stop, take in the scale of the landscape, and photograph the view back over Cassis and the bay.
Cassis AOC Wine Tasting: One of France's Oldest Appellations
The afternoon closes with a wine tasting at a carefully selected estate near Cassis. The Cassis appellation holds a distinguished place in French wine history — it was one of the very first AOC designations granted in France in 1936, alongside Sauternes and Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The appellation covers only the district of Cassis itself, producing wines entirely in the shadow of Cap Canaille from a small number of estates.
The Cassis AOC is best known for its dry, aromatic whites — among the most food-friendly wines on the Mediterranean coast — but the estate also produces rosés and reds of genuine character. Your guide introduces each wine in the context of the terroir, the microclimate, and the history of the appellation.
Return to Aix-en-Provence
At the close of the afternoon, your guide drives you back to Aix-en-Provence and drops you off at your hotel or accommodation. As a fully private tour, the return time can be adjusted slightly to suit the pace of your group's day.
