Program & Itinerary
Rocamadour: Half-Day Guided Tour from Sarlat
Immerse yourself in the captivating beauty of one of France's most stunning villages, nestled in the Quercy region. Built dramatically against a cliff, Rocamadour is an architectural marvel that reflects the hierarchical structure of the French feudal system, with distinct areas for the chivalry, the clergy, and the peasants.
The lower section of the village was traditionally home to peasants’ houses, the middle level is dominated by the sanctuary where the clergy resided, and at the top of the cliff stands the castle, residence of the local lord representing the chivalry.
Meet Your Expert English-Speaking Guide
Your half-day Rocamadour adventure begins as you meet your English-speaking local guide, an expert on the Dordogne and Quercy region. After a brief overview of the itinerary and program, step into a spacious, comfortable, air-conditioned Mercedes minivan and let your exploration begin.
Rocamadour: A Picture-Perfect Pilgrimage Site
Travel through the countryside to Rocamadour, a village famous for its pilgrimage sites and fortress. Perched in a gorge above a tributary of the River Dordogne, Rocamadour takes its name from the association of St. Amadour, whose relics were discovered in the sanctuary in 1166, and the Occitan word for rock, “roca.”
Wander through the medieval streets with your guide until you reach the steps leading to the heart of the village. As you ascend the Great Staircase—around 216 steps—imagine the medieval pilgrims who climbed it on their knees as an act of devotion.
Visit the Monastic Buildings and Sanctuary
Upon arrival at the sanctuary, your guide introduces you to its key sites and legends. Look for the legendary sword of Roland, Durandal, embedded in the cliff. According to tradition, Roland, Charlemagne’s nephew, threw the sword from the battlefield so it could never be used again.
Explore the Notre Dame Chapel, part of a remarkable 13th-century complex. Hear the story of the Black Madonna statue, carved from walnut wood in the 12th century, and admire the ship models hanging from the ceiling, offered by sailors saved from shipwrecks after invoking her protection. Listen for the miraculous bell said to ring once for each ship saved, and admire 12th-century frescoes depicting the Annunciation and Visitation opposite the chapel.
Free Time and Panoramic Views
After your guided visit of the sanctuary, enjoy free time to explore Rocamadour at your own pace. If you exit at the same level, you can walk up to the castle above the village. While the castle interior is not open to visitors, you can stroll along the ramparts and take in panoramic views over the Alzou canyon and the surrounding landscape.

How strenuous is this tour?
Rocamadour is a medieval village. This implies that there are cobblestone streets that can be difficult to walk on. However, there is a possibility of taking an elevator but this will be at your own expense. -
How many steps will we have to climb in Rocamadour?
Once you have visited the village, you will arrive in front of the Great Staircase. This is the main pilgramage way to arrive at the sanctuary. There are about 216 stairs to climb so this can be challanging for some persons.
