Explore the Rich History and Culinary Delights of Dordogne: A Journey Through Time

Discover Dordogne, a region renowned for its prehistoric art, rich history, and exceptional culinary traditions. Home to some of the most stunning examples of ancient cave paintings and medieval architecture, Dordogne offers an unforgettable experience for history enthusiasts and food lovers alike. Sarlat-la-Canéda, the culinary capital of the region, stands as a highlight of this picturesque area, known for its vibrant food markets and medieval charm.

Uncover Prehistoric Art in a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Dordogne is celebrated for its prehistoric caves, where artists from tens of thousands of years ago etched and painted magnificent works of art on cave walls. The Prehistoric Sites and Decorated Caves of the Vézère Valley — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — are among the finest examples of Palaeolithic art in the world, making the region essential for those fascinated by the origins of human creativity.

Depart from Bordeaux & Discover the World-Famous Lascaux IV

Begin with pickup from your hotel or accommodation in Bordeaux and travel in comfort to Montignac, home to the legendary Lascaux IV International Centre of Parietal Art. This state-of-the-art museum brings prehistoric art to life through interactive displays and immersive technology, featuring a full-scale replica of the original Lascaux cave with over 600 prehistoric paintings and 1,000 engravings.

Recognised as one of Time Magazine's "100 Greatest Places to Visit," Lascaux IV was meticulously recreated by a team of artists using advanced 3D scans and physical castings — a remarkable testament to both Palaeolithic genius and modern craftsmanship.

Step Back in Time in Medieval Sarlat-la-Canéda

After Lascaux IV, continue to Sarlat-la-Canéda, one of the best-preserved medieval towns in France and the heart of the Périgord Noir. Its golden limestone streets are lined with buildings dating from the 13th to the 18th century, including the Lantern of the Dead, Saint-Sacerdos Cathedral, and La Boétie's House.

On market days (Wednesdays and Saturdays), your guide will introduce you to the region's celebrated culinary specialties — foie gras, truffles, walnuts, and Périgord wines. After a guided walking tour, enjoy free time to explore at your own pace and lunch at one of Sarlat's many characterful restaurants.

Visit the Village & Castle of Beynac

The day concludes in the medieval village of Beynac, classified as one of the Most Beautiful Villages of France. Perched on a limestone cliff overlooking the Dordogne River, the imposing Beynac Castle is a 12th-century fortress with crenelated walls, double moats, and barbicans — a key strategic stronghold during the Hundred Years' War that offers breathtaking views of the surrounding valley.

FAQ

  • What is the best time of year to visit the Dordogne?

The Dordogne is beautiful year-round, but late spring and early autumn are particularly special — the crowds are smaller, the light is golden, and the seasonal produce in the markets is at its peak. Summer is the busiest period, with Sarlat especially lively in July and August. Winter visits have their own charm, particularly if the truffle season (December to February) is of interest.
  • Can we visit a specific château or prehistoric site?

Absolutely. As a private tour, the itinerary is flexible. If there is a particular château — such as Beynac, Castelnaud or Milandes — or a prehistoric site you are keen to visit, simply let us know at the time of booking and your guide will do their best to accommodate your request. Please note that entrance fees to paid sites are generally not included in the tour price.
  • Is lunch included?

Lunch is not included in the base price, but the Dordogne is one of France's great gastronomic regions and your guide will be happy to recommend excellent local restaurants. Dining in Sarlat or at a riverside village is very much part of the experience, and arrangements can be made in advance on request.
  • Is this tour suitable for families with children?

Yes — the Dordogne is a wonderfully family-friendly destination. Prehistoric caves, dramatic châteaux, river landscapes and hands-on markets all tend to captivate younger travellers. Your guide will adapt the pace and content of the day to suit the ages and interests of everyone in your group.
  • Is Sarlat market worth visiting and when does it take place?

Sarlat's famous market is widely considered one of the finest in France. The main market days are Wednesday and Saturday mornings, when the old town fills with stalls selling truffles, foie gras, cheeses, walnuts and seasonal produce. If your visit falls on a market day, your guide will make sure to include it in the itinerary.
  • What will we see and do on this tour?

The tour combines the very best of the Dordogne — the medieval streets of Sarlat, the dramatic river valley with its clifftop châteaux, prehistoric sites, and the region's outstanding local food culture. As a private tour, the itinerary can be tailored to your interests, whether that is history, gastronomy, prehistory, or simply soaking up the scenery.
  • How far is the Dordogne from Bordeaux and how long is the journey?

The Dordogne region is approximately 120 to 150 km east of Bordeaux, around 1.5 to 2 hours by car depending on your destination within the region. All transport is included in your private tour — your driver-guide will collect you from central Bordeaux and return you at the end of the day, so you can simply sit back and enjoy the journey.
