Program & Itinerary
Private US D-Day Tour from Caen
Departing from Caen, this private full-day tour takes you to the main American D-Day sites along the Normandy coast. Travel with an expert English-speaking guide and explore key battlefields, memorials and villages at a pace tailored to you.
Pick-Up in Caen or Nearby
Your guide picks you up directly at your accommodation in Caen or the surrounding area. After a brief overview of the day, settle into a comfortable, air-conditioned minivan with an onboard sound system for clear commentary. As this is a private tour, the itinerary remains flexible and can be adapted to your interests, within the time available.
Omaha Beach – The Bloody Omaha
Begin at Omaha Beach, one of the two American landing sectors and the scene of some of the heaviest fighting on D-Day. On the sands and along the bluffs, your guide explains why Omaha became the toughest beach of Operation Overlord, how German defences were organised and how the assault finally broke through, linking familiar film scenes to the real terrain and personal stories.
Normandy American Cemetery, Colleville-sur-Mer
Continue to the Normandy American Cemetery overlooking Omaha Beach, where thousands of American servicemen are buried. Walk among the white crosses, visit the chapel and memorial, and use the large maps and displays to place the fighting at Omaha within the wider Battle of Normandy, with time for quiet reflection and photos.
Pointe du Hoc (Subject to Access)
Head to Pointe du Hoc, the dramatic cliff-top strongpoint between Utah and Omaha Beaches where U.S. Rangers scaled the cliffs under fire to neutralise German guns. Among bomb craters, casemates and bunkers, your guide shows why this position mattered so much and how the assault unfolded.
Important: Due to ongoing road and construction works at Pointe du Hoc, access may be limited in 2026 and 2027. If the site is closed, it will be replaced by another historically significant location such as Sainte-Marie-du-Mont, Angoville or Carentan, ensuring the same level of historical insight.
Utah Beach – Westernmost Landing Zone
Continue west to Utah Beach, the westernmost American landing beach. Learn how the 4th Infantry Division came ashore here with fewer losses than at Omaha, thanks to strong naval and air bombardment and airborne troops who disrupted German defences inland, and see how sea conditions and currents influenced the landings.
Sainte-Mère-Église – Airborne Town
End the day in Sainte-Mère-Église, one of the first towns liberated on 6 June 1944 and a symbol of the U.S. airborne operations. Around the church square, your guide recounts the night drops of the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions, the paratrooper caught on the steeple and the street fighting that followed, with the option to focus on strategy or personal stories depending on your interests.
A Flexible, In-Depth D-Day Experience
Throughout the day, your private guide adapts the level of detail to your background, whether you are discovering D-Day for the first time or deepening existing knowledge. With door-to-door pick-up from Caen, comfortable transport and a flexible, expert-led itinerary, this tour offers a rich and immersive way to experience the American D-Day landing beaches and sites.
