Program & Itinerary
Honfleur Shore Excursion to Normandy D-Day Beaches (American Sector)
Departing from Honfleur Cruise Port, this private full-day D-Day tour takes you to the historic Normandy coastal battlefields, where the Allied landings of 6 June 1944 marked the beginning of France’s liberation. Travel with an expert English-speaking guide and explore some of the most emblematic sites of the American sector.
Pick up from your cruise ship in Honfleur
Your guide will meet you directly at your cruise ship in Honfleur. After a short briefing on the itinerary and your main interests, board your comfortable, air‑conditioned vehicle and begin the drive toward the Normandy coastline. As this is a private tour, the schedule is flexible and can be adapted to your priorities while still covering the key highlights.
Omaha Beach – the toughest landing sector
One of your main stops is Omaha Beach, the best‑known and bloodiest of the American landing zones. Despite intensive pre‑invasion bombardments, many German defenses remained operational and strong currents and mis‑landings pushed troops and vehicles off course. Standing on the sand and looking up at the bluffs, your guide will describe how these factors combined to create a deadly battlefield, and how, despite heavy losses, the troops eventually broke through and secured the beachhead.
Pointe du Hoc or Longues‑sur‑Mer Battery
When access allows, your tour includes a visit to Pointe du Hoc, the dramatic cliff‑top stronghold between Utah and Omaha Beaches where U.S. Rangers scaled the cliffs under fire to silence German artillery. Among bomb craters, shattered bunkers, and casemates, you’ll gain a vivid sense of the courage and determination required to capture this position.
Important notice: Due to ongoing road and construction works at Pointe du Hoc, access to the site may be limited in 2026–2027. If the site is closed or significantly restricted on the day of your visit, it will be replaced by the Longues‑sur‑Mer Battery, one of the best‑preserved German coastal artillery positions in Normandy, where original guns and intact casemates still face out over the Bay of the Seine.
Normandy American Cemetery – a place of remembrance
Your tour also includes a poignant stop at the Normandy American Cemetery in Colleville‑sur‑Mer, overlooking Omaha Beach. Here, more than 9,000 American servicemen are laid to rest. You will have time to walk among the perfectly aligned white crosses and Stars of David, visit the memorial and reflecting pool, and, when time allows, explore the Visitor Center to place the D‑Day operations in a broader historical context.
Return to Honfleur Cruise Port
After visiting the key sites, relax on the drive back to Honfleur. Throughout the day, your certified English‑speaking driver‑guide is by your side to share historical insights, answer questions, and adapt the pace of the tour. You will be dropped off at your ship in time for departure, having gained a deeper, more personal understanding of Normandy’s D‑Day beaches and remembrance sites.

This shore excursion is best for cruise passengers who want a meaningful, time‑efficient way to experience the key Normandy D‑Day sites in one day from Honfleur. It’s ideal for history enthusiasts, especially those interested in World War II and the U.S. role on D‑Day, who want expert commentary at Omaha Beach, Pointe du Hoc, and the American Cemetery rather than a quick photo stop. The small‑group, private format (maximum around 8 travelers) particularly suits couples, families, and friends who value a personalized pace, room to ask questions, and quieter moments for reflection at cemeteries and memorials. Because pickup and drop‑off are right at the Honfleur cruise terminal, it also works very well for guests who prefer a stress‑free, fully organized day with guaranteed return to the ship.
