This private half day small group wine tour packs a lot of delights into a few hours. Add to this the rich historical attractions of this UNESCO World Heritage site and you see why the half day option makes for such a great tour.

Depart from Bordeaux and reach the Graves wine producing region

Starting in the city of Bordeaux, a short drive in a comfortable air-conditioned minivan brings you out of the city to the picturesque countryside plains and rolling hills of the left bank wine producing area.

This is the heart of Bordeaux’s famous wine region, where many vineyards carry the Graves and Pessac Léognan AOC designation. Each of these local wineries produce vintages with distinct soil features backed by a long winemaking heritage.

Located South of Bordeaux, this wine region is known to be the original wine producing region of Bordeaux. This is the area where the Romans first planted grapes just about 2,000 years ago. The name of the region originates from the soil that can be found here, deep layers of grave and stonel!

Your first major stop on this personalized Graves half day trip will be in one of the local estates for a visit and tasting at a Grand Cru Chateau. Here, we have scheduled an appointment for you. You will be greeted at the Chateau and will get to tour and taste different vintages in this carefully selected domain.

Your Ophorus guide will be with you during the guided tour so don't hesitate to ask any questions. All our driver/guides have great knowledge about wines and they will be happy to share any basic or more technical information concerning French or Bordeaux Wines.

Whether you have questions about history, technique, flavors, aromas, food & wine pairings don't hesitate to ask them anything that relates to wine to make this half day a very special one.

Discover the Pessac-Léognan wine producing area

This quite recent appellation used to be part of the Graves. Due to its recognition of producing high quality red and white wines, the area was rewarded with a communal appellation in 1987.

The red wines of Pessac Léognan are based on Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc grape varieties. The white wines produced here are generally made of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon grapes. The soil is quite similar to the one that can be found in the Graves region which is mainly gravel, stone and sand.

One of the most prestigious wineries of the appellation is Chateau Haut-Brion that was granted the 1er Grand Cru Classé level of 1855, sole chateau to be located outside the Medoc & Sauternes wine producing regions.

Upon arrival in the wine region, we stop at a carefully selected winery. Here, you will have the opportunity to taste the different wines of the estate including white and red wines. After the visit, it will be time to head back to Bordeaux that is just a short drive away and that will be the end of this half day tour.

FAQ

  • Do you organize pick up and return at accommodation for Bordeaux private tours?

Yes, absolutely. We will come and pick you up at your Hotel, accommodation or AirB&B in Bordeaux. We can also come and pick you up if your accommodation is located within a 30 kms (20 miles) radius around Bordeaux.
  • What type of vehicles are used during your Bordeaux private wine tours?

Our company uses only premium cars & minivans that are new or recent, comfortable and fully equipped including individual A/C, shaded windows and large leg space.
  • Who conducts your private wine tours from Bordeaux?

We only employ accredited and licensed tour guides that are also the drivers for all tours that need visits to be conducted by certified guides. Good examples are: the visit of museums, guided walking tours in cities, visit of historical monuments and so on.

In some regions, where wine tours prevail (Bordeaux, Alsace, Burgundy, Loire Valley) the tours are conducted by professional local guides or sommeliers that are experts in Wines.
  • How many Bordeaux wines will I taste during this private half day Graves tour?

Unlike other wine tasting sessions that you might have followed around the world, the tastings in Bordeaux are not as generous in terms of pours . The amount of wine tasted is not what many would expect but here it is all about elegance, fruit, quality, aromas and flavors rather than quantity.

Each Chateau will have you taste their premium wine and what we call the 'second' wine of the estate. Sometimes, Chateau owners also add a tasting of some other wine if they happen to be the owners of another Chateau in Bordeaux. So basically, at each winery visited it will be 2 to maximum 4 wines tasted. In the Graves region, many Chateaus produce both reds and whites which mean you can expect to taste more wines than in the other wine regions of Bordeaux.
  • Is it possible to visit Château Haut Brion?

Yes, absolutely. Château Haut Brion is open to visitors however the groups are limited in number and visits do not take place everyday. The tour of Haut Brion can be combined with a tour to La Mission Haut Brion. If you would like to visit this winery, don't hesitate to reach out and our team of travel advisors will do the rest. Important information though, as visits to this winery are in high demand, you will need to plan your visit months ahead!
  • Why is the Graves wine region named that way?

The name Graves, which does sound a bit weird in Englis, actually refers to the soil of this wine producing region of the Bordeaux vineyards. This area is actually where the Bordeaux wines were born. Located to the south of the City of Bordeaux, on the left bank of the River Garonne, the Graves wine region is characterized by the Gravel soil on which the vineyard is planted. Originating from the Occitan language that was spoken during the medieval times Gravas, la "graves" (it is feminin word) is mainly composed of Gravel as well as more or less sand and clay.
  • What type of wine is Graves?

Graves is a very interesting Bordeaux wine region to visit as it is the only one where you can wine taste the three main wine types of Bordeaux - reds, whites and sweet wines. The wine production is dominated by the red wines that are typically blended with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet France to which winemakers sometimes add Petit Verdot and/or Malbec. The typical white wines of the Graves wine region are dry and blended with Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon grape varieties.
  • What type of wine is Pessac-Léognan?

Pessac-Léognan wines resemble in a way those of Médoc wine region. The main grape varieties used in the blend of the wines are Cabernet Sauvignon & Merlot that bring to these wines a subtle mix of power, delicateness and refinement. As for the whites, the blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon grapes bring complexity, freshness, intensity and harmony to these wines. The Pessac-Léognan appellation includes all of the Crus Classés of the Graves wine region that produce reds and/or dry whites.
