Saint-Émilion: Private Wine & History Half-Day Tour from Bordeaux

This private half-day tour combines a Grand Cru winery visit with a guided walk through the UNESCO World Heritage village of Saint-Émilion — one of Bordeaux's most iconic Right Bank appellations, celebrated for its Merlot and Cabernet Franc blends. Surrounded by rolling limestone hills and medieval architecture, Saint-Émilion offers a rare combination of world-class wine and living history.

Your expert English-speaking driver-guide leads an exclusive visit to a classified growth château, where you'll tour the cellars and enjoy a commented tasting of Grand Cru Bordeaux wines. All winery visit and tasting fees are included, ensuring a seamless, all-inclusive experience.

Along the way, your guide introduces you to the Bordeaux appellation system, the characteristics of Right Bank terroir, and the winemaking techniques that give Saint-Émilion wines their signature elegance and structure.

Explore the Medieval Village of Saint-Émilion

Step into centuries of history as you walk the cobbled streets of Saint-Émilion. Your guide brings the village to life with the story of the 8th-century hermit Émilion, whose legend gave the village its name, and traces its remarkable evolution from a monastic settlement to one of the world's most celebrated wine appellations.

Admire the elegant arches of the Romanesque cloister and discover the breathtaking Monolithic Church — an extraordinary underground monument entirely carved into the limestone cliffs (optional visit, inquire for details). These landmarks are recognised as part of the Saint-Émilion UNESCO World Heritage Site, inscribed for both its cultural landscape and its living winemaking tradition.

Free Time to Explore at Your Own Pace

After the guided tour, enjoy free time in the village to browse the charming wine shops, discover artisan producers, or simply soak in the panoramic views over the vineyards. Your guide can recommend local specialties and the best spots for a glass or a light lunch.

Know before you book

Important information concerning wine tours in France: We carefully select the wineries visited during our wine tours, but the number of wines you’ll taste is set by each estate and varies by region, price and quality.

Enjoying wine is a wonderful part of discovering France’s culture and heritage. We encourage guests to savor each tasting responsibly and at their own pace. Please remember that wine contains alcohol, and moderation helps you fully appreciate the flavors, keep a clear head throughout the tour, and make the most of your experience.

What is moderation?

Please note:
In France, snacks are usually not provided during wine tastings to preserve the purity of the wine's flavor. We recommend having a good breakfast or lunch beforehand.

In regards to the protection of the environment, we will no longer provide plastic bottles of water during our tours. You are kindly advised to bring your own. Water and refills are available at the wineries, museums and attractions visited.

FAQ

  • Where is Saint-Émilion France?

Saint-Émilion is a village located to the East of Bordeaux in the South West region of Nouvelle Aquitaine in France. At approximately 27 miles (44 kilometers) from Bordeaux, our Wine Tours from Bordeaux are the easiest way to reach the village and experience a great Bordeaux wine tour.
  • What is Saint-Émilion Wine?

Saint-Émilion wine is a Bordeaux red wine that is produced in the area of appellation called Saint-Émilion; like most Bordeaux wines, Saint-Émilion red wines are blended wines which means that to obtain the premium wine, wine makers will mix different grape varieties. Traditionally, the most common grape varieties used for Saint-Émilion wines are Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon.
  • What to do in Saint-Émilion?

The village of Saint-Émilion located near Bordeaux in France is a most charming village classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site. There are many things to see & do in Saint-Émilion village including:

    1. Tasting local Saint-Émilion Wines
    2. Visit the unique Underground Monolithic Church
    3. Taste the local delicacy, the Macarons
    4. Climb the Bell Tower for an exceptional panoramic view over the vineyards
    5. Taste the local cuisine in one of the numerous top restaurants located within the village.

  • What type of vehicles are used during a Bordeaux private wine tour?

Our company uses only premium cars & minivans that are recent, comfortable and fully equipped including individual A/C, shaded windows and large leg space.

  • Who conducts your private wine tours from Bordeaux?

We only employ accredited and licensed tour guides that are also the drivers for all tours that need visits to be conducted by certified guides. Good examples are: the visit of museums, guided walking tours in cities, visit of historical monuments and so on. In some regions, where wine tours prevail (Bordeaux, Alsace) the tours are conducted by professional local guides, that are experts in Wines.
  • Can we choose which wineries we will visit on your Saint-Émilion half day trip from Bordeaux?

Yes, we will be happy to make the pre-bookings for your winery tours of Saint-Émilion. Please note that most wineries open their doors to visitors but some high end wineries such as Cheval Blanc, Petrus, Ausone and a few others do not welcome any visitors. Also, it is important to mention that we only make the required Château reservations once you have booked your tour with Ophorus.
  • Are the Winery Tours private in Bordeaux?

Yes, we do our best to privatize the wine tasting sessions during our Private Bordeaux Wine tours such as this one. This means that you will follow a private visit of the winery, followed by a private commented wine tasting session.
  • How many / much wines are served in the Wineries?

In Bordeaux, the Wineries will typically serve 1 to 3 wines during the tasting sessions. It is always the wine produced by the chateau that will be tasted. Usually the first and second wine of the estate.

Important note: For all our guests who have experienced wine tours in other countries, please note that the average pour of wine in Bordeaux is less important than in other destinations. Even though we strive to work with Wineries that are more generous, they remain the only ones that can determine the quantity of wine poured in a glass.
