Program & Itinerary
Three Commented Alsace Grand Cru Tastings
Explore the very best of Alsace’s vineyards on a full-day tour dedicated to the region’s Grand Cru wines. Created in 1975, the Alsace Grand Cru appellation brings together 51 exceptional terroirs, each defined by precise geological and climatic criteria. Strict rules on delimited plots, low yields, vine growing, and minimum natural ripeness ensure wines of outstanding concentration, purity, and ageing potential. Only four noble grape varieties are used for almost all Alsace Grands Crus: Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, and Muscat, each expressing these sites with its own texture and aromatic profile.
Discovering the Kaefferkopf Grand Cru and Biodynamic Winemaking
Your day begins with an introduction to benchmark Grands Crus, where guided tastings reveal how soil, exposure, and grape variety combine to shape style and structure. You then continue to one of Alsace’s most distinctive and confidential sites: the Kaefferkopf Grand Cru in Ammerschwihr. Its name, meaning “beetle head”, refers to the shape of the hills that form the heart of the cru. Here, a complex geological base mixes granite at the top of the slopes with limestone and sandstone lower down, producing powerful, finely structured wines. When possible, this is also the moment to discover biodynamic winemaking at pioneering estates such as Domaine de la Sinn or Domaine Martin Schaetzel, where organic methods, herbal preparations, and careful attention to soil life guide every decision in the vineyard.
Southern Grands Crus: Muscat and Gewurztraminer at Their Best
In the afternoon, you head to the southern part of the Alsace Wine Route to taste emblematic Grands Crus such as Steinert, Goldert, or Hatschbourg. This is where you discover the dry, intensely aromatic style of Alsace Muscat, marked by pure notes of fresh grape and blossom rather than sweetness. You also sample superb Gewurztraminers from Hatschbourg: full-bodied wines with solid structure, rich texture, and a wide aromatic palette often including exotic fruit, rose, spice, and hints of liquorice. When available, late-harvest Vendanges Tardives and Sélection de Grains Nobles Gewurztraminers reveal the most opulent side of these terroirs, with exceptional richness and layered complexity.
A Flexible Private Day Among Alsace’s Great Terroirs
Because this is a private full-day Alsace wine tour, the itinerary can be tailored to your interests. You can focus on particular grape varieties, include tastings of Crémant d’Alsace and elegant local Pinot Noirs, or add time in some of the most beautiful wine villages, such as the walled town of Riquewihr. This flexible, in-depth day is ideal for travellers who want to move beyond introductory tastings and immerse themselves in the great wines and landscapes of Alsace Grand Cru country.
