Program & Itinerary
Choose your wine style
Our private tours from Aix en Provence can take you to a number of wine appellations located in the Provence region. Guided by your local expert wine guide, learn about the characteristics of the terroir and the wine making process as you stroll through the ageing cellars. Participate in private visits and tours to discover and sample a large selection of wines. Below you will find our selection of Provence Appellations that you can visit from Aix en Provence:
Coteaux d'Aix en Provence
The vineyards of Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence are the furthest to the West among the wines of Provence. The appellation area extends from the Durance River to the Mediterranean Sea, and from the Rhône Valley (West) to Sainte-Victoire Mountain (East).
The area is famous for its reds and rosés. The red wines have a beautiful texture, they are ample with tight tannins that give a beautiful structure and volume. The rosé wines offer roundness on the palate and a beautiful aromatic depth, before finding freshness, and sometimes minerality, in the finish.
Côtes de Provence Sainte Victoire
The vineyards of Côtes de Provence Sainte-Victoire are located at the foot of Sainte-Victoire Mountain. The poor, relatively shallow soil here, formed of limestone and clayey sandstone, bears quality vineyards; great red wines that are delicate or robust and generous, as well as elegant rosés with subtle flavours.
Bandol
The Bandol vineyard lies in a natural amphitheatre where the vines are planted on terraces over approximately 1,600 hectares. Sheltered by the massif of Sainte Baume to the North culminating at 1,147 metres, the Bandol vineyard descends in terraces towards the sea in a magnificent amphitheatre of wooded hills.
Bandol is a resolutely red wine, mainly produced from the Mourvèdre variety, known as the king of the appellation. Mourvèdre is the chief grape variety in the blend (50% to 95%). It is harmoniously combined with Grenache and Cinsault, the former bringing generosity to the wine, the latter giving it refinement.
Bandol rosés are enchanting. Their roundness and generosity make them different from other rosé wines. Mourvèdre, Grenache and Cinsault combine to give, by direct pressing, a well-structured, refined, pale-coloured wine with delicate salmon hues.
Cassis
Established as a Protected Appellation (AOP) in 1936, Cassis was one of the first vineyards in the region to obtain this qualification for the wines produced. The village is one of the few local appellations of the south of France composed of a single, tiny commune.
Cassis is the only region in Provence to produce a majority of white wine, regulated to contain at least 80% Marsanne. This varietal adds beautiful aromatics and finesse, an elegant profile for the refreshing, high-quality white wines of Cassis.
Chateauneuf du Pape
The Châteauneuf du Pape Appellation was one of 6 to be labeled as the first AOC wines of France in 1936. The vineyards planted by the Romans were extended and developed by the Pope's residing in Avignon popes during the 14th century.
In 1314, Clement V, the first Avignon Pope discovered the special soil of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. His successor, John XXII supports him and it was during his reign that the vineyard really took off and spread fame beyond the borders of “The Comtat”.
As you reach this famous wine producing region, discover the village and its ancient castle that was the summer residence of the Pope's during their stay in the area. Here, you will enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view on the valley.
All our full day wine tours include commented wine tastings in carefully selected wineries. You will be prompted to ask which Provence appellation you would like to include on your tour during the booking process. If you have no idea, just select the option 'Help me decided' and our team will designe the perfect Provence wine tour
