Prehistory Highlights from Sarlat: National Museum, La Roque Saint-Christophe & Lascaux IV

Set out from Sarlat-la-Canéda to explore some of the Dordogne’s most celebrated prehistoric sites, accompanied by a local English-speaking guide who specializes in Paleolithic history. This full-day small-group tour combines museums, cliff dwellings, and cutting-edge cave replicas for a complete introduction to prehistory in the Vézère Valley.

Meet Your Guide with Ease

Begin your journey by meeting your guide at the designated departure point in Sarlat. Look for the Ophorus tour sign and your guide’s name badge for a smooth start. After introductions and a brief overview of the day’s program, you’ll be ready to travel back in time.

Travel in Comfort

Sit back in a comfortable, air-conditioned Mercedes minivan as you drive through the picturesque Dordogne countryside. Large windows provide panoramic views of river valleys, forests, and limestone cliffs. An onboard audio P.A. system ensures every guest hears the guide’s insightful commentary throughout the day, wherever they are seated.

National Prehistory Museum (Les Eyzies)

Your first major stop is the National Prehistory Museum in Les Eyzies, often considered the world capital of prehistory. Set beneath dramatic cliffs and partly housed in a modern building and former château, this museum holds one of the most important collections of Paleolithic artifacts in France.

During a guided visit, discover stone tools, carved objects, ivory sculptures, and remains of animals that once roamed the Vézère Valley. This exhibition provides essential context for understanding how early humans lived, hunted, and created art long before the painted caves you will encounter later in the day.

La Roque Saint-Christophe

Next, continue to La Roque Saint-Christophe, an extraordinary troglodytic site carved into a towering limestone cliff along the Vézère River. Inhabited from Paleolithic times through the Middle Ages, this multi-level rock shelter illustrates how people adapted their homes and defenses to the natural rock face.

Follow your guide along terraces and walkways to see reconstructions of prehistoric shelters, medieval houses, and ingenious winches and cranes once used to haul materials up the cliff. The visit reveals both the ingenuity and resilience of the communities that lived here for thousands of years.

Lunch Break

Enjoy a relaxed lunch break at a local restaurant, with suggestions from your guide or the freedom to choose your own spot (meal not included). Take this time to enjoy regional specialties and reflect on the morning’s discoveries before the afternoon’s highlight.

Lascaux IV: International Center for Parietal Art

In the afternoon, head to Lascaux IV, the International Center for Parietal Art, located near Montignac. This state-of-the-art museum presents a complete, high-precision replica of the original Lascaux cave, which is permanently closed to protect the paintings.

On a guided visit inside the replica cave, you’ll encounter some of the most famous Paleolithic artworks in the world—majestic bulls, horses, stags, and abstract signs—reproduced with extraordinary accuracy using advanced 3D scanning and traditional painting techniques. Additional exhibition spaces and multimedia displays help you understand the techniques, meanings, and scientific research behind this prehistoric masterpiece.

Return to Sarlat

After immersing yourself in these legendary sites, travel back to Sarlat in the late afternoon. Your guide will recap the key themes of the day, from early human life to rock shelters and parietal art.

This full-day excursion offers a comprehensive and engaging journey into prehistory, ideal for anyone curious about the origins of art and human culture in the Dordogne. Please note: The order of visits may vary according to reserved time slots at Lascaux IV.
