Program & Itinerary
Château d'Yquem occupies a category entirely its own. The only estate ever classified as a 1er Grand Cru Classé Supérieur in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification — a distinction awarded to no other property — it has produced the world's most celebrated sweet wine for over four centuries from its hilltop estate in the Sauternes appellation, south of Bordeaux. The Anthology experience is one of the most exclusive ways to visit: a private guided tour of the estate followed by a comparative tasting of three exceptional vintages, accompanied by culinary pairings prepared to complement each wine.
Sauternes and the Art of Noble Rot
The wines of Sauternes owe their extraordinary character to one of the most counterintuitive processes in all of winemaking: Botrytis cinerea, or noble rot — a fungus that, under precisely the right climatic conditions, concentrates the sugars, acids, and aromatic compounds in the grape to an extraordinary degree. The microclimate of Sauternes is perfectly suited to this process: morning mists rising from the Ciron river encourage the fungus to develop, while warm, dry afternoons arrest its spread and allow slow, controlled desiccation of the berries. The result is a wine of intense golden colour, extraordinary sweetness, and extraordinary complexity — with aromas of honeysuckle, blossom, dried apricot, and saffron that evolve over decades in bottle.
Château d'Yquem produces its wine primarily from Sémillon, complemented by Sauvignon Blanc and smaller quantities of Muscadelle and Sauvignon Gris. In the most exacting vintages, each vine produces only a single glass of wine — a reflection of the estate's uncompromising standards of selection.
Your Private Anthology Experience
Your tour begins with pickup from your accommodation in Bordeaux and a scenic drive south through the Graves and into the rolling vineyards of Sauternes. On arrival at Château d'Yquem, a dedicated estate host welcomes you for a private guided tour of the property. You will walk through the vineyards to understand how the specific soils, slopes, and microclimate of this hilltop estate shape Yquem's singular style, then visit the vat room and historic cellars to discover the rigorous berry-by-berry selection process, the pressing, and the long oak ageing that underpins the estate's legendary wines.
The Anthology Tasting: Three Exceptional Vintages
The visit culminates in the Anthology tasting — a rare comparative experience guided by the estate ambassador. Three exceptional vintages of Château d'Yquem are presented side by side: 2006, 2010, and 2016 — three very different years, each expressing its own personality, aromatic evolution, and brilliance. Delicate culinary preparations are served alongside each wine to elevate the tasting and illustrate the remarkable versatility of Yquem at the table. It is an unhurried, deeply informed tasting experience of a kind that simply does not exist elsewhere in Bordeaux.

In regards to the protection of the environment, we will no longer provide plastic bottles of water during our tours. You are kindly advised to bring your own. Water and refills are available at the wineries, museums and attractions visited.
