The Auvergne Rhône Alpes region of France is located on the central eastern part of the country stretching from the Central Mountain range to the Alps bordering Italy and Switzerland. The Capital city of the region is Lyon that is a fantastic destination to itself and the gastronomic capital of France where world class french cuisine is present in a number of restaurants .
To the south of Lyon, the Rhone Valley is home to some prestigious sites. From prehistoric times with Chauvet cave to the Gallo Roman period with the Sites of Vienne and Saint Romain en Gal or Valence the area is a feast for all history buffs. This part of the region is also home to the Côtes du Rhône local wines where famous appellations such as Côte Rotie, Condrieu, Saint Joseph or Crozes Hermitage make for unique wine tours.
There are also numerous charming villages and stunning landscapes but a visitor favorite are the lavender fields that bloom in July. Located in the Drome Provençale area, the flowering period stretches from mid june to mid august depending on your exact location. Most of the perched villages of the region date back to medieval times and many of them are
