The region boasts 4,400 hectares (10,000 acres) of vineyards, and the designation AOC Cahors is exclusively used for red wines. The higher terraces and Grèzes areas, composed of limestone blocks from the Causse plateau, produce richer Cahors wines suitable for aging. Beyond 300 meters altitude, on the less fertile limestone plateau, wines are less full-bodied but possess great finesse.
