Program & Itinerary
Explore the Exquisite Châteauneuf du Pape Wine Region
Embark on an unforgettable shared full-day small group tour, beginning with a convenient pickup from the centrally located tourism office in Aix en Provence. Meet your knowledgeable English-speaking driver-guide, who will provide a detailed overview of the day's itinerary. Set off towards the prestigious Châteauneuf du Pape wine region, where you'll indulge in multiple wine tasting sessions at carefully selected wineries.
Châteauneuf du Pape Wine Tour
Delve into the rich history of the Châteauneuf du Pape Appellation, recognized as one of the first AOC wines of France in 1936. These vineyards, originally cultivated by the Romans, flourished under the patronage of the Avignon popes during the 14th century.
In 1314, Clement V, the first Avignon Pope, discovered the unique soil of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. His successor, John XXII, furthered his vision and propelled the vineyard's fame beyond the borders of "The Comtat."
Jacques Duèse, the former bishop of Avignon, ascended to the papacy as Pope John XII in 1316. He was an avid consumer of wines from the northern vineyards and played a pivotal role in enhancing viticulture practices in the region.
The Pope sought a tranquil location, distant enough to deter courtiers and opportunists, yet close enough for a courier to travel between Avignon and Châteauneuf on the same day. The idyllic spot was discovered on a hillock overlooking the Rhône Valley—Châteauneuf—where the area fell under the Pope's direct authority.
As you arrive in this renowned wine-producing region, admire the village and its ancient castle, which once served as the summer residence for the Pope. Revel in a breathtaking panoramic view of the valley.
Morning Wine Tasting Session in a Local Winery
Châteauneuf du Pape wines are celebrated for their robust, full-bodied reds, primarily crafted from grape varieties like Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvèdre, characteristic of southern French vineyards. Additionally, the region produces intensely perfumed white Châteauneuf du Pape wines, incorporating grape varieties such as Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, Clairette, and Bourboulenc, many of which are rustic French varietals.
Upon reaching the village, indulge in a wine tasting session at a local winery. Following the tasting, enjoy some free time to explore and embark on a wine tour of Châteauneuf du Pape wines in the ancient 14th-century Pope cellars. If desired, your guide can recommend additional wineries for further tastings.
Savor a Delightful Lunch in a Local Restaurant (at own expense)
After the morning's Châteauneuf du Pape wine tour, treat yourself to a satisfying lunch. Your guide will gladly suggest various options, ensuring a memorable culinary experience.
Afternoon Wine Tasting Session in a Local Winery
Following lunch, immerse yourself in a captivating second Châteauneuf du Pape winery tour. Learn about the unique history of the estate, explore the facilities, and participate in a guided tasting of the estate's remarkable wines. Take advantage of this opportunity to inquire about the winemaking process, the diverse blending techniques employed, and the wide range of grape varieties utilized to create these exceptional wines.
Conclude the Wine Tasting Experience
After the wine tasting tour, we will accompany you back to Aix en Provence, marking the end of our services. Depart with cherished memories of an enchanting journey through the Châteauneuf du Pape wine region. Book now to reserve your place on this extraordinary tour.
