Meet The Pioneers Of Sustainable Winemaking

Discover our selection of unique Bordeaux wineries that have converted to organic and/or biodynamic farming. Learn more about this sustainable and eco-friendly way of winemaking as you meet the winemakers and be introduced to the beautiful relationship that exists between soil, climate, and wine – a notion that can be synthesized in one French word: Terroir.

Today we will take you to several wineries that have made the decision to produce organic wines or use biodynamic farming methods, that is a spiritual-ethical-ecological approach to wine making. Over the years, more and more wine makers have chosen to take another path and organic winemaking is the trend right now! Your tour will be conducted by an expert wine-guide that will explain along the way the pros and cons of each method. The 3 wineries that you will visit today have been selected so that you may have a complete overview and better understanding of these methods.

Organic Wines Organic farming is defined by regulation (country-specific) or stand-alone certification. It avoids chemical fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides and herbicides. Copper and sulfur are spread in the fields. In France, the certification process is quite strict and spans over several years. “AB” is a logo owned by the French state that stands for ‘Agriculture Biologique’. Products can be labelled with this mark when they contain at least 95 percent organic components, were produced or processed within the EU, and were certified by one of the inspection bodies accredited by the state agency.

Biodynamic Winemaking Biodynamic farming takes several factors into account when farming, such as the lunar calendar and astrology. The farming is more about the entire lifeblood of a vineyard — other plants, insects, animals — not just the grapes. Biodynamic wine is made by farming all components of the vineyard as one whole entity, eliminating the use of chemicals and using natural materials and composts. Following the biodynamic calendar is another integral part of the process. Sometimes, these farming practices, from pruning to harvesting, are controlled by the biodynamic calendar.

FAQ

  • Do you organize pick up and return at accommodation for Bordeaux private tours?

Yes, absolutely. We will come and pick you up at your hotel or accommodation in Bordeaux or within a 30kms (20 miles) radius at no extra cost.
  • What type of vehicles are used during your Bordeaux private wine tours?

Our company uses only premium cars & minivans that are recent, comfortable and fully equipped including individual A/C, shaded windows and large leg space.
  • Who conducts your private wine tours from Bordeaux?

We only employ accredited and licensed tour guides that are also the drivers for all tours that need visits to be conducted by certified guides. Good examples are: the visit of museums, guided walking tours in cities, visit of historical monuments and so on.

In some regions, where wine tours prevail (Bordeaux, Alsace, Burgundy) the tours are conducted by professional local guides or sommeliers, that are experts in Wines.
  • Can we choose which wineries we will visit during your Bordeaux private wine tours?

Yes, absolutely. Our team of travel advisors will make the required pre-bookings for your winery tours of Organic Bordeaux wines. Just let us know your winery selection and our team will contact the wineries directly. Please note that we only make the required Chateau reservations once you have booked your tour with Ophorus.
  • Are the winery Tours private on your Bordeaux Private tours?

Yes, we do our best to privatize the wine tasting sessions during our Private Bordeaux Wine tours such as this one. This means that you will follow a private visit of the winery, followed by a private commented wine tasting session.
  • How many / much wines are served in the Wineries?

In Bordeaux, the Wineries will typically serve 1 to 3 wines during the tasting sessions. It is always the wine produced by the chateau that will be tasted. Usually the first and second wine of the estate.

Important note: For all our guests who have experienced wine tours in other countries, please note that the average pour of wine in Bordeaux is less important than in other destinations. Even though we strive to work with Wineries that are more generous, they remain the only ones that can determine the quantity of wine poured in a glass.
  • In which wine region will this Organic Bordeaux private wine tour take place?

We can take you to all the major wine regions of Bordeaux during this tour. During the booking process you will be asked which region you would prefer to visit.
    • The medoc wine region produces red wines that are mainly blended with Cabernet Sauvignon grapes
    • The Saint Emilion wine region produces red wines that are mainly blended with Merlot grapes
    • The Graves & Sauternes wine region produces red wines (Cabernet Sauvignon), white wines (Sauvignon Blanc) & sweet white wines
If you do not have any ideas concerning which region you would like to go to, there is an option: Help me choose. Check that option if you would like our team to give you more information about which region to pick depending on your wine preferences.
