Once you have met your guide, he/she will go over the program and itinerary of the day with you. Then, begin to make your way to the Tapestry Museum of Bayeux.
During the day, travel in a spacious Mercedes Minivan
Your private Bayeux & Caen private full day tour will take place in one of our very spacious Mercedes Minivans. This vehicle can take up to 8 persons.
All our vehicles are equipped with an on board P/A system that allows you to hear the commentary of your driver/guide no matter where you are seated. Also, there is free Wi-Fi access in all vehicles. Bottled water is also available in all our vehicles.
Start your tour in Bayeux
This Normandy private tour starts in Bayeux. It is a medieval town that has kept a lot of its beautiful ancient architecture. The town center offers lots of good restaurants and small shops where you will be able to enjoy a good lunch and buy souvenirs for friends and family.
Visit the Bayeux Tapestry Museum
Yet, Bayeux is mostly renowned for its tapestry museum. Dating back from the 12th century, the tapestry is an impressive 70 meters long and retraces the conquest of England by William, Duke of Normandy at the time, who would soon become William the Conqueror and King of England.
On this piece of art made of wool and cloth, more than 600 soldiers and 200 horses are depicted. The tapestry is an absolutely unique part of the UNESCO World Heritage. In the museum, you will be accompanied by one of our expert, English-speaking private guides. Please note that the visit will be on your own as tour guides are not allowed to make commentaries inside.
Visit the Bayeux Cathedral
The cathedral is built in Norman style, that was dedicated in the presence of William the Conqueror in the year 1077. Years later, it was extended in Gothic style, leaving us with a true architectural gem today.
Once you have explored Bayeux, this private tour of Normandy will take you to Caen to continue following the footsteps of William the Conqueror, who was later buried there.
Reach the town of Caen
Saint Stephen’s Abbey, also called the Men’s Abbey - Abbaye aux Hommes, was founded by William in 1063. Up until today, it has remained one of the main Norman buildings in the region. With you private certified guide, learn about the history of why William ordered the church to be built, and explore the abbey and the grave of one of England’s most famous kings.
Next, visit the castle of Caen
At the time of William the Conqueror, the Château de Caen was the most important in the duchy of Normandy. During your visit, enjoy the well preserved remains of the castle and its ramparts. The inside of the castle is now home to the Normandy museum and the Museum of Fine Arts.
Or visit the Caen Memorial Museum
If the historical part of Caen is not to your wishes, it is possible for us to adapt this tour and include the visit of the Caen Memorial Museum. Here, discover the different exhibitions that are dedicated to World War II in general and the Battle of Normandy in particular. The museum also showcases an exhibition dedicated to the Cold War and has just put in place an immersive 19 minute long movie to better understand the common European History.
All visits on this private Normandy tour are conducted by an English-speaking guide. You will be transported between locations with a private, fully equipped Mercedes minivan. With this small groups tour you will be able to discover how William the Conqueror has influenced the two beautiful cities of Bayeux and Caen!
