Below is a selection of major sites linked to the U.S. forces on D-DAY that you can choose to visit. During the tour, your guide can suggest appropriate lunch options, or we can make restaurant reservations in advance on your behalf.
1. Utah Beach
Experience the historic Utah Beach, where the U.S. forces landed on D-Day. Despite pre-landing bombings, the German positions in this sector remained active. The troops and vehicles were disembarked too far from the shore, leading to significant casualties under heavy German fire. Immerse yourself in the events of June 6, 1944, as your guide recounts the bold and triumphant large-scale invasion that unfolded at Omaha Beach. This formidable assignment posed the greatest challenges and defenses among all the landing beaches, designed to repel any Allied advances.
2. Pointe du Hoc
Situated between Utah and Omaha beaches, visit Pointe du Hoc, a stunning cliff that provides panoramic views of the English Channel and features lunar landscapes and impressive bomb craters. The Rangers were entrusted with this challenging mission due to the site's formidable nature. The German forces had strategically placed an artillery battery of long-range cannons at Pointe du Hoc, capable of targeting the American landing beaches. Lieutenant Colonel James E. Rudder, commanding the 2nd Ranger Battalion, led the mission to scale the 100-foot cliffs and neutralize the German positions. Gain deeper insights into the heroic endeavors of these soldiers and marvel at the breathtaking surroundings.
3. Normandy American Cemetery in Colleville
Conclude your tour with a poignant visit to the Normandy American Cemetery in Colleville-sur-Mer. This revered cemetery serves as the resting place for 9,387 American soldiers who lost their lives during the Battle of Normandy. It stands as a symbol of the sacrifices made by the United States in Europe's liberation. Take time to stroll through the serene grounds and pay homage to the fallen heroes. Explore the Visitor Center, offering a comprehensive perspective on the monumental D-Day landings and their significance.
4. Longues-sur-Mer German Artillery Battery
Discover the well-preserved German artillery battery at Longues-sur-Mer, strategically positioned between Omaha and Gold beaches. This battery formed a crucial part of the Atlantic Wall, featuring four casemates housing 150 mm guns. Even today, you can witness some original cannons capable of launching 45 kg shells over a distance of 22 km. Delve into the history of this strategic location, offering a panoramic view of the Bay of the Seine from the firing command post.
5. Embrace History on Your Personalized Tour
Experience the westernmost landing beach, Utah Beach, where the U.S. 4th Infantry Division commenced their assault. Thanks to the valiant efforts of airborne troops, the Utah Beach landing achieved significant success, preventing substantial counterattacks. Explore the remnants of the German strongpoint on La Madeleine beach and witness the modest defenses that succumbed to the overwhelming air and naval bombardments.
6. Sainte-Mère-Église
Transport yourself to the midnight hours of June 6, 1944, as American and British airborne troops descended upon French soil. The sector of Sainte-Mère-Église witnessed the establishment of a bridgehead by the 82nd and 101st U.S. Airborne Divisions. Learn about their critical role in supporting the U.S. infantry's landing at Utah Beach and their subsequent efforts to capture Cherbourg.
7. Airborne Museum
Immerse yourself further in the historic events of Sainte-Mère-Église at the Airborne Museum. This museum commemorates the intense battles that unfolded on the night of June 5 to 6, 1944. Marvel at an impressive collection of uniforms, weaponry, and war memorabilia, including the renowned Douglas C-47 troop transportation plane, also known as the 'Skytrain,' and a rare Waco glider.
At the end of this unforgettable day, we will transport you back to Bayeux, concluding our services.
