Discover the Scenic Wonders of Dordogne: Domme, Beynac, and River Cruise
Embark on a 4-hour small-group private tour from Sarlat and capture the picturesque beauty of the Dordogne region. Pack your camera and delve into the rich history of the area as you explore the medieval town of Domme and venture into the 12th-century Beynac Castle. Conclude the tour with a serene river cruise along the Dordogne River, gazing at the magnificent châteaux that grace its banks.
Pickup from your Sarlat Accommodation
Begin your adventure with convenient pickup from your centrally located hotel or accommodation in Sarlat la Caneda. Meet your English-speaking driver guide, who will provide an overview of the program and itinerary for this private half-day tour.
Set off in Comfort and Style
Board our air-conditioned vehicle and journey toward the stunning Dordogne Valley. As your small group immerses themselves in the breathtaking landscapes, listen to your knowledgeable tour guide share captivating insights into the local culture and history.
Explore the Enchanting Bastide Village of Domme
Today's expedition unveils the captivating landscapes and medieval villages of the Dordogne valley. Our first stop takes us to the charming village of Domme. Designed with a trapezoid city plan, Domme showcases the unique architecture of a fortified medieval town adapted to its surroundings. Classified as one of the "Plus Beaux Villages de France" (The Most Beautiful Villages of France), Domme boasts a rich history. It served as a prison for the Knight Templars in 1307 and witnessed the tug of war between the English and French during the Hundred Years' War.
Indulge in a Serene Boat Ride
Next, we venture to La Roque Gageac, where you'll enjoy a tranquil cruise along the Dordogne River aboard an authentic Gabarre, a traditional flat-bottomed boat used for transporting goods since the Middle Ages (tickets not included). Marvel at the majestic castles that line the riverbanks and let the soothing rhythm of the boat carry you. Your one-hour cruise offers a unique perspective on the Dordogne's châteaux and villages, accompanied by informative commentary about the local sights, wildlife, and the history of the Gabarres. Don't miss the opportunity to explore the Gardens of La Roque, a haven of micro-climate conditions where local and exotic flora coexist.
Conclude the Tour in Beynac
Our final destination is Beynac, where you'll be captivated by the village and the commanding Beynac Castle. This impressive medieval structure, perched atop a limestone cliff, dominates the town and the northern bank of the Dordogne River. Built in the 12th century by the barons of Beynac, it was strategically positioned to guard the valley. The castle's defensive features include double crenelated walls, double moats—one of which is a natural ravine—and a double barbican. Experience the awe-inspiring atmosphere as you soak in the historical significance and breathtaking views.
Return to Sarlat After an unforgettable journey through Dordogne's treasures, we conclude the tour and return you to Sarlat, leaving you with memories to cherish. Book now for a captivating exploration of this remarkable region.

Yes, absolutely, we will come and pick you up at your hotel or accommodation in Sarlat. We can also come and pick you up within a 30kms (20 miles) radius around Sarlat. -
What type of vehicles are used during your private tours from Sarlat?
Our company uses only Mercedes Vito Tourer 8 seater minivans that are recent, comfortable and fully equipped including individual A/C, shaded windows, large leg space and on board P/A system for commentaries by the guide. -
Are your tour guides in the Dordogne licensed / accredited guides?
We only employ fully accredited, licensed tour guides that are also the drivers for all tours that need visits to be conducted by certified guides. Good examples are: the visit of the National Prehistory Museum, guided walking tours in villages such as Domme, visit of historical monuments and so on.
In the Dordogne, all our guides are experts in History & Culture. All have a large experience in Paleolithic Art and conduct tours in both Caves & Castles.
If you wish to find out if a person is an official guide of the Dordogne, just ask them if they can conduct a visit in the Prehistroty Museum or a guided walking tour of Sarlat. If the answer is no, then they are not a fully registered tour guide! -
how strenuous is this private half day trip from Sarlat?
This tour includes some walking around the medieval villages of Beynac, La Roque Gageac & Domme, where you have still a large number of cobblestone streets. This tour implies that you wear comfortable walking shoes. This tour is not adapted to persons with walking disabilities. You must be in a good physical condition to follow this excursion. -
Is the Gabarre boat ride worth it?
The Gabarre boat were traditional River boats that sailed from the Quercy and Dordogne regions towards Bordeaux. The boat ride that we recommend departs from La Roque Gageac and follows the River Dordogne for a few miles. During the ride you will see the stunning landscapes including the limestone cliffs, the walnut groves and Dordogne forest. Other highlights include the Village or La Roque from the River, Marqueyssac castle & gardens and Castelnau castle. The boat ride lasts about 1 hour and is a great way to see the Dordogne from the River.
Please note that in the Spring or Autumn season, it the water level is too high, the boats are not allowed to navigate. We can replace the boat ride with visits to castles or gardens located in the surrounding area. -
Does this tour run on rainy days?
This tour is available everyday between April and end of October. The tour leaves, rain or shine!
