Recently, the Bordeaux wine region has become a prolific destination for winery architecture. Sir Norman Foster, Philippe Starck, Mario Botta or Jean Nouvel are just a few of the most famous architects that have transformed the vineyard landscape by refurbishing Chateaus, designing new cellars or building adventurous contemporary wineries.

However, graceful and elegant architecture has been around for quite a while in Bordeaux. From the traditional ‘Chartreuse’, a country house of the 18th century to the eclectic styles of the wineries built in the Medoc during the 19th century, let us show you our selection of remarkable winery architecture in Bordeaux that spans over 300 years. All our day tours to these astonishing wineries of Bordeaux are conducted by a certified guide knowledgeable in architecture.

This tour can be taken in any of the three following wine regions: The Médoc, Saint Emilion & the Graves & Sauternes.

Pick up at your hotel or accommodation in Bordeaux

At first we will come and pick you up at your hotel or accommodation in Bordeaux. Meet your English speaking driver guide who is an expert in Architecture and Bordeaux wines. After going over the program of the day tour conducted with you, it will be time to board your premium vehicle and start to make your way towards your first winery visit. Depending on the wine region you have chosen, you will find below a short selection of the wineries that might be included on your day.

Winery visit suggestions include:

The Médoc wine region

Château Cos d’Estournel (Saint Estèphe) - One of the most exotic wineries of the whole Bordeaux vineyards. Built in the 19th century by Louis Gaspard d’Estournel who was the first Bordeaux wine maker to export his wines to India in the early 1800’s, the winery resembles an oriental palace. With its impressive entrance door brought back from the Island of Zanzibar, pagodas, exotic decorations this visit leaves no one indifferent.

Château Pedesclaux (Pauillac) - Inaugurated in 2015, the new cellar imagined by French architect Jean Michel Wilmotte takes in consideration the wish of the owner to bring back the wine production at the heart of the estate. The 18th century ‘Chartreuse’ was completely renovated and is now surrounded by large glass structures. The winery perfectly matches traditional & contemporary architecture.

Chateau Talbot (Saint Julien) - This Grand Cru Classé winery of Saint Julien recently renovated its grounds and specifically its ageing cellar. Complex and creative, this futuristic cellar resembles a cathedral with its pillars that form a tree structure holding the ceiling. This ‘forest’ is a perfect reminder of the importance of wood in the ageing process and the beautiful, perfectly aligned, wine barrels come as no surprise.

Château Beychevelle (Saint Julien) - one of the latest wineries to have completely renovated its grounds. The new cellar was designed by Arnaud Boulain and is one of the most contemporary buildings that can be found in the Bordeaux vineyards. This hi-tech structure is equipped with 55 cone-shaped vats and the ageing cellar can house more than 1 300 wine barrels.

Château Cantenac Brown (Margaux) - This massive Tudor style winery certainly stands out in the Medoc wine region of Bordeaux and even more so in the Margaux appellation. Founded in 1806 by John Lewis Brown a Scottish wine merchant, the winery has recently been acquired by a French family that has decided the construction of a state of the art environmentally friendly winery and barrel cellar that it hopes will be a model for sustainable design. A stop in front of this winery makes for a great photo opportunity.

The Saint Emilion wine region

Château La Dominique ( Saint Emilion) - Certainly one of the most famous contemporary wineries, French Architect Jean Nouvel is at the origin of the Red Cellar of Chateau La Dominique. Inaugurated in 2014, the building is like a unique horizontal line that crosses the vineyard tinted in scarlet red. The Architect wanted to represent all the possible colors of Bordeaux red wines. Here, the use of stone and stainless steel combined with the lighting and mirror effects, allows for a different impression depending on where you are standing.

Château Faugères (Saint Emilion) - Designed by Swiss Architect Mario Botta, ‘The Cathedral’ as it is coined certainly makes Château Faugères stand out. Here, the futuristic wine making & ageing cellars offer a spectacular balance between concrete and light. The winery tour is perfectly organized and one can only be amazed upon arrival at the tasting room by the stunning panoramic view on the Saint Emilion vineyards and the facing original ‘Chartreuse’.

Château La Fleur de Boüard ( Lalande de Pomerol). Owned by the De Boüard family who are also the happy owners of Château Angelus in Saint Emilion. This intimate winery located in the lesser known Lalande de Pomerol appellation makes for a fantastic testing ground for innovative wine making methods using that latest scientific and technological knowledge. What makes the visit so unique are the wine making facilities that you will certainly have never seen anywhere else in the world.

The Graves & Sauternes wine region

Château Les Carmes Haut Brion (Pessac-Léognan). Located within Bordeaux, this winery inaugurated in 2016 a new vinification cellar, ageing cellar and an entire hospitality area inspired by French designer Philippe Starck and Architect Luc Arsène-Henry. The winery combines tradition with an audacious contemporary design amidst a prestigious park set within the Bordeaux city limits.

The more than futuristic cellar, shaped like a blade of raw metal, sits upon a peaceful stream in the middle of a serene landscape of woods and vines. The actual Château still stands proudly, on top of a hill, looking down upon one of the most fascinating cellars built in the past 10 years.

Château La Louvière ( Pessac-Léognan). The present day Chateau dates from 1791 but the history of Château La Louvière goes back to the early 14th century. The 18th century building is a true gem and was classified as a Historical Monument in 1991. Today, the property is owned by Jacques Lurton and it has become one of the most successful wineries of the Pessac-Léognan appellation producing both red and whites that are reasonably priced for such quality wines.

Château de Malle (Sauternes). Located in the heart of the Sauternes wine region, Château de Malle is actually a real Castle - in Bordeaux wineries are named ‘Château’ even if the building itself is not a castle! With its magnificent Renaissance architecture and Italian style gardens the visitor is plunged as if he was in a Florentine landscape.

The construction of the castle dates back to the 17th century and is today classified as a Historical Monument. Most importantly, the Chateau produces two different types of wines: Graves white wine and Sauternes sweet white wine that was included in the 1855 Classification.

  • Can we choose which wineries we will visit during your Bordeaux private wine tours?

Yes, absolutely. Our team of travel advisors will make the required pre-bookings for your winery tours of Organic Bordeaux wines. • How many / much wines are served in the Wineries?

In Bordeaux, the Wineries will typically serve 1 to 3 wines during the tasting sessions. It is always the wine produced by the chateau that will be tasted. Usually the first and second wine of the estate.

Important note: For all our guests who have experienced wine tours in other countries, please note that the average pour of wine in Bordeaux is less important than in other destinations. Even though we strive to work with Wineries that are more generous, they remain the only ones that can determine the quantity of wine poured in a glass.
