Van Gogh lived in Provence between 1888 and 1890, before leaving for Auvers sur Oise. It is his friend Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec that advised him to move to the south because of the luminosity of southern landscapes. First in Arles and then in Saint Remy de Provence, it is during this period that Van Gogh will paint some of his most famous landscape paintings and portraits. In 1889 the painter leaves Arles and is admitted in a psychiatric clinic near Saint Remy. This period is clearly defined by a modification of style: the graphism and touch allied to sinuous and uncontinued lines organise the wheat fields, olive groves, celestial sky of the Alpilles and Baux de Provence, movement that reflects his pathology.
