Description

Located toward the southwest corner of France, Dordogne is known worldwide for its beautiful countryside, mild weather and medieval villages packed with ancient castles. In fact, there are over a thousand castles in this region alone; lending a historical and mysterious feel to the entire area. Cyclists consider Dordogne one of the nicest places to ride because it provides a lovely combination of natural beauty, with the Dordogne River running right through the town, and ancient history virtually untouched by the hand of time. There are many reasons why Dordogne should be on any cyclist’s to-do list.


Day 1: BERGERAC

Arrival in Bergerac, a large town with good rail access and services. This is your getaway into the famous Black Perigord. The historic city is very picturesque and offers visits including the Maison des Vins - for local wines. Settle at your charming hotel.


Orientation

Oour local guide (French native & English speaking) will meet you at your hotel in the evening of your arrival day (or morning after according to the time we will plan with you). He will bring your road-books, GPS and touristic information. An expert of the region, you can ask him all the questions you have about your trip.


Day 2: BERGERAC / MAUZAC / GRAND CASTANG / TREMOLAT 

After breakfast, we will do a transfer at 9:30 am to Lalinde, a nearby village that was once a fortified site. The hike from there is a quiet scenic walk along the canal to discover the beautiful landscapes of the Perigord and views over the Dordogne River. Walk on the GR6 to Tremolat.

Distance : 17 Km (10 mi).

Elevation : 313 m.

Day 3: TREMOLAT / CIINGLE DE TREMOLAT / LIMEUIL / LE BUGUE 

Today, you follow the GR6 that will lead you to Limeuil, one of the most beautiful villages of France with its 12th century church. Your final destination is Le Bugue. To visit today : Limeuil ; Porte Romane and 18th century house in Le Bugue.

Distance : 18.5 Km (11 mi).

Elevation : 383 m.

Day 4: LE BUGUE / FONT DE GAUME / LES EYZIES DE TAYAC

After breakfast, today's itinerary will take you to the Capital of prehistory : Les Eyzies ! A quiet walk in the countryside along La Vezere river, where you will have the opportunity to enjoy the scenery, before reaching Les Eyzies. Les Eyzies has many sites worth a lot of your time including the National Museum of Prehistory, the Grotto of Font de Gaume, and smaller pre-hisotry sites.

Distance : 12 Km (7 mi).

Elevation : 275 m.

Dinner (included) and night at your hotel.


Day 5: LES EYZIES DE TAYAC / HELL'S CANYON / LES EYZIES DE TAYAC

Today you can either take the day off to relax or do a loop tour around Les Eyzies. +If you choose to walk, the itinerary will take you to the Gorge d'Enfer, located north of Les Eyzies. On this hike, you'll discover the many prehistorical sites of the area, such as the Caves of Grand Roc, L'abri du Poisson and many more. This is a very scenic walk through the forest where you will have several viewpoints over the Vezere river. Return to Les Eyzies.

Distance : 7 Km (4 mi).

Elevation : 144 m.


Day 6: LES EYZIES DE TAYAC / COMMARQUE CASTLE / SARLAT

After breakfast; Walk from Les Eyzies to Marquay through the Vallee de la Beune. This is where many small rivers join the Vezere. Today's walk will also take you to the Roc de Cazelle caves, where prehistoric habitations have been reproduced. Next, you'll reach the Château de Commarque, a 12th century castle located on a rocky outcrop in the valley of the river Beune.

At 5:30 pm a taxi will meet you in Marquay and transfer you to Sarlat.

Overnight in Sarlat.

Distance : 14 Km (9 mi).

Elevation : 500 m.


Day 7: SARLAT / BEYNAC CASTLE / LA ROQUE GAGEAC VILLAGE / MONFORT CASTLE / SARLAT

After breakfast, you have a nice loop tour to Beynac. You will have a transfer by taxi to the start, at 9:30 am. The route will first take you to the village of Vitrac. Then, after walking through the Cingle de Montfort, you'll reach La Roque Gageac, where you can take some time to visit the troglodyte sites. Includes time at the medieval village of La Roque Gageac, named « one of France's most beautiful villages »; Exotic garden in La Roque Gageac, and the Château de Beynac.

At 5:30 pm a taxi transfer will take you back to Sarlat

Distance : 12 Km (7 mi).

Elevation : 333 m.


Day 8: SARLAT

Departure from Sarlat : You can take your time getting started in the morning to have breakfast and depart at your leisure. Trains from Sarlat connect nearby towns and on to Paris all day long.

During your orientation we provide you 1 GPS for 3 people. The model is a Garmin 600t (or equivalent) The routes described in your roadbook are pre-programmed in the GPS. You simply have to follow the line shown on the GPS, and enjoy !
