As Lonely Planet reveals: "Lush meadows and green woods roll out along the meandering banks of the Dordogne, one of France’s most iconic and idyllic rivers. In centuries gone by, the valley marked an important frontier during the Hundred Years War, and the hilltops are studded with defensive châteaux, as well as heavily fortified towns. These days it’s a picture of French tranquility.

This morning depart for the mighty castle of Castelnaud a medieval fortress overlooking the Dordogne River, erected to face its rival, the Château de Beynac. The oldest documents mentioning it date to the 13th century, when it figured in the Albigensian Crusade; During the Hundred Years' War, Castelnaud pledged allegiance to the Plantagenet, whereas the lords of Beynac across the river, to the king of France. In later times it was abandoned until it served as a quarry after the French Revolution. Today the picturesquely restored château houses a much-visited museum of medieval warfare, featuring reconstructions of siege engines such as the trebuchet.

After a guided walking tour of the castle, head towards the castle of the Milandes. Built around 1489, it was the main house of the lords of Caumont until 1535. In 1937, the entertainer Josephine Baker rented the château and then bought it in 1947. Completely transformed by the artist at the time, your visit will plunge you back in the styles of the day and will make you discover an unknown facet of the life of the artist, her commitment as a resistance fighter during the 2nd world war.

Finally, end the day with the visit of the Castle and Gardens of Marqueyssac: listed as a National Historical Monument it offers more than 6 kilometers of shaded paths, edged with 150 000 hand-pruned hundred year old boxwoods. As you walk along the cliff sided by the Dordogne and the Gardens, you will reach one of the most breathtaking belvedere of the region, overlooking the quaint village of La Roque Gageac.
