Description

"Want to smile happily ever after? Linger in a fantasy land full of castles, cliff-top châteaux, and storybook villages? Join the club. Since the 1990s the Dordogne region has ranked among the hottest destinations in France. Formerly one of those off-the-beaten-path areas, it's now in danger of getting four-starred, boutiqued, and postcarded to death", but you can still avoid the crowds and follow one of our tours to discover one of the most authentic and appealing regions of rural France.

This full day Dordogne tour has been carefully designed to bring you the best this region has to offer. Begin the tour with a guided walking tour of Sarlat. The town developed around a large Benedictine abbey of Carolingian origin. Because modern history has largely passed it by, Sarlat has remained preserved and one of the towns most representative of 14th to 16th century France. During this private guided tour you will discover the most famous monuments and buildings of the town including the mysterious "Lantern of the Dead".

Your day will continue with a walking tour in two delightful villages: Beynac and La Roque Gageac. While in La Roque Gageac, enjoy a boat ride along the Dordogne River to admire all the mighty castles that line the River.

Your next stop will be in Les Eyzies de Tayac, the world capital of Prehistory as this is the town where Cro-Magnon was discovered. Here visit the National Prehistory Museum. Established in July 2004, the museum houses some 18,000 pieces and a collection of six million artifacts. The museum’s collections were established as early as 1913, when indefatigable researcher Denis Peyrony convinced the French state to acquire the Château des Eyzies, built at the end of the 16th century, and to transform it into an excavation warehouse that could double up as a museum. Follow your guide and discover the main chapters of the Hominids’ development through an anthropological frieze and a brief reminder of Africa’s history, starting with the early Australopithecines. Many themes are explored, including the legendary “Lucy”, the small 3.5-million-year-old woman discovered in Ethiopia in 1974. You will then visit the permanent exhibit galleries that will plunge you into the mists of time, revealing seven sequences that cover the entire Paleolithic era through an “ideal historiography”.

Finally, end the day with the visit of Lascaux IV cave, a perfect reproduction of the original cave. Opened in 2016, Lascaux IV is a triumph of technology. Unlike any other cave visits, Lascaux 4 is employing different set designs, displays, state-of-the-art interactive workshops and immersive technology to bring it to life. In fact, the atmosphere inside the replica cave is just like that of a real cave: dark, damp and muffled.
